What can happen if you don't stay focused

I was playing around in Photobucket tonight and took a minute to scroll through many of the coins I've owned over the years. Kind of all over the place... image

    I'm just shaking my head.
That is an awesome collection you had the privilege to care for.

  • That would be the right way to collect, I think. Buy what you like WHEN you like it ... then go for something new. These are all great coins!

No kidding. You are the epitome of focus, compared with me (Austro-German thalers, Barber halves, medals, Buffalo nickels, large-size currency,.....).

I can see how almost every one of these could catch the eye and lead to a purchase.

At this time, I prefer to be unfocused.... concentrating on sets/series etc can be very consuming. Cheers, RickO

Other then the OGH gold type set you considered yet quickly came to your senses and abandoned... I'd say your 99% more focused then the rest of us! imageimage

When I don't stay focused, I tend to pay too much for too little.
  • Nice set, I would not say unfocused, you are just using a different lens.

I see a focus-- it's the grab what you like from the Redbook approach. I like it. image That Saint Patrick Farthing is hammered. It reeks of spooky early copper.

If we simply subtract the gold type pieces, it still looks like a very tight group of Colonials and Washingtonia with a beautiful Conder to boot! As it pertains to your set, what do you mean by not staying focused? Perhaps you could expand a bit on what you mean by this.

You have a darned good eye!

That's my favorite as well. What a great looking collection.

I think a little bit of many things is OK. I have a few ancients, a colonial, some world, but do not consider myself a collector in those areas. They are just cool. It is hard to be a collector and not be impressed by the variety out there. But none of that interferes with my focus on a few key sets. Very interesting pieces and I can understand why you would want to own them, well most of the anyway. image

    Well let's see...
    Redbook colonials
    Conder Tokens
    Hard Times Tokens
    Federal issue gold pieces
    Irish Gun Money
    Early 19th century Mexican
    Lincoln Cent
Mid 19th century Paquet Washington pieces
    Other very esoteric Washingtonia
    French gold shipwreck coin

Yup, this certainly seems to show a lack of focus!

To expand on that a bit...my chosen specialty is pedigreed colonials. I can't help but wonder wha that collection would look like if I had stayed focused solely on it over the years!

I would be embarassed to show how random my purchases have been........ from Henry VIII hammered gold to PCGS luncheon slabs. image

What you call "lack of focus" I call "an appreciation for attractive looking coins no matter the series." And in that sense, you are most certainly focused.
My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.
  • For a second I thought you had posted CRO's website. Nice coins, which one do you still own?
