1844 Seated half: this one is real

rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,632 ✭✭✭✭✭
I stumbled upon this nice 1844-P half this afternoon on the website of a favored dealer for the lowly price of $400 plus shipping. Unlike yesterday's 1847, this one is probably real (LOL). PCGS AU58 Seated halves of any date (except for a handful of the commonest dates) are a very tough bird to locate. What's that shiny oval thing on the holder, though? I think I'll peel it off when it arrives.

In other news, I now own three 1844-P halves, which qualifies as a major hoard.

The same dealer also has an 1858 PCGS AU58/CAC with a similar appearance. It's a very common date, though, so I passed.

Love the skin -- reminds me of an 1862 Seated Half I used to own (also PCGS AU58). It had a gray patina which seemed to "float" above what you could tell was a lot of flash and luster below it, and when you looked at it at just the right angle in the light, you could see it come out.

An 1862-P half in PCGS AU58 would be a hot commodity these days. That is a difficult date to locate, and this series is heating up. The "PCGS AU58 effect" would further enhance the market value. I doubt you could find an 1862 business strike in a PCGS holder in any AU or Unc. grade if you searched the entire web.

I also have an AU50 with thick crust that some people would want to downgrade to XF45 due to the dirt. It was bought from a well-known eBay seller (seller's images below) for a very attractive price; I think about half of what the PCGS AU58 went for. I absolutely love this coin and would rank it in the top 1% of Seated halves for originality. I also have an XF to XF45 coin, also totally original, that has some scattered contact marks from circulation. It's not as nice, so it may be heading for consignment unless it's a scarce WB variety. I will have to get it out of the bank and look at it.

The 1858 they had was a nice coin as well, and seems to be gone now too. Very nice pick up.image
