.

Here is a quarter that has a lack of toning around the devices or at least quite a bit less. I have seen many coins like this in the past some certified, some raw. I can't figure out if these areas are just protected by the devices and that is why they aren't toned? Or is it because the coin has been cleaned some how in the past and has caused this affect. I want to know the best answer to this. The real reason for this happening. Not the best image, but the most recent coin I came across. Thanks in advance.

Interesting question and observation. Like you said---certain areas are protected by the devices and aren't touched so those areas are less likely to tone. Also, why did you delete the title of this thread?

One reason I have seen posed before, is that area is a stress area when the coin is struck, thus a slightly different metallic structure. Now, that being said, I have seen many coins that do not exhibit the effect. So much depends on the history of the coin (environment, usage, care - such as storage or cleaning -, etc). Could be a number of reasons on any specific coin such as this one. Cheers, RickO
