Well since I just went through a learning experience with an 1877 as well, I'm going to say that I too don't like the look of the last 7. Here is my thread on my adventures with an 1877:
<< <i>Raw IHC... good hole filler in an album.. not worth submitting... Cheers, RickO >>
For one, the authenticity to me seems to be in question here:
I'm not seeing a shallow N in ONE The second 7 in the date doesn't appear to be larger/taller/above than the first 7
I'm seeing red flags here, how about others?
As for authentication and whether it should be sent to a TPG - HECK YA if it's real! >>
I fully agree. Though, this is a series I'm not familiar with AT ALL. BUT, due to the last (very recently) thread about NJKen's fiasco on this date, I lernt me sumthin' about this particular date, and delved a bit more into it, as it's a heavily counterfeited coin. Thanks to NJKen's thread/fiasco (no offense, NJKen, seriously, you know where I'm coming from), the N and the 7 looke suspect to me at second glance. But, again, I'm literally still at the beginning of identifying the 'tells' of the fakes. I understand the possibility of it being a proof, but the odds don't seem great, at least to me.
Seems like most of the raw examples of these being brought up are fakes. Is this one of those coins that, due to it's high price in ANY grade, could have more fakes, than authentics? With a little over 850,000 minted, that'd be alot of fakes...but the Chinese DO pump out alot of 'merchandise', not to mention the fakes produced here, for years and years. If you were to find one in a 'junk bin' or someone's 'stash', I'll bet it's more than a heartstopper, but to the informed, I have to think after the heart started beating again, it'd be a 'guilty until proven innocent' thing. I could be wrong, but from someone who is learning something new here (thats why I love this place), I think I'm seeing a fake. As for sending in for authentication, I'll leave that up to those of you with more knowledge.
How can anyone give an accurate opinion base on terrible scans. People thought this 1877 was counterfiet for the same reason and it turned out to be authentic. The coin does appear to have problems, but I'm not ready to say it's fake until I can see better photos.
Fake unless it's from the proof dies...which I'm not seeing. The "N" should be weakly struck if it's authentic, which it's not. Sorry to say, I'm fairly certain it's a counterfeit.

Yes, I would send for authentication. I too don't see it as real, unless it is a proof?

Definitely not a coin I would have bought raw.

It does appear to be cast.
