Does the HSN have a special deal with the mint?

I don't normally watch the HSN, but caught there coin show over the holiday break. I was watching before the first of the year, and they were selling 2012 silver eagles ANAC NS70 "first day of issue." From everything I have read, the mint has not released these to the Authorized Purchasers yet, so how did the HSN get the coins before anyone else. From what I have heard on the boards, they do this with a lot of the issues.

Anyone know of a relationship between the Mint and HSN? Anyone with experience with a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) inquiry know how we can find out?

  • They're always stating that their trucks are waiting at the loading dock of the Mint to await delivery. They probably ..do..have a inside connection considering the bulk of sales as other big Bullion dealers.

I think they just have ANACS produce a 2012 holder and then they use a 2011 silver eagle. If you notice they never show the actual date of the eagle up close.

Watching the show, that was my first thought, but then I got to thinking they probably actually have the coins. One of the reasons was the available number was an odd amount, 13,329 Which makes me think they already sent them to be graded and they know how many came back 70.

I sent an e-mail to the HSN asking if it was a pre-sale of if they actually have the coins now. We will see what they say.

I caught part of that show, just out of curiosity. I believe that it was stated in the fine print
that it was a pre-sale, with the actual coins being shipped in January. I think that HSN has
a supplier for the coins, and this supplier probably has an agreement with one of the big
bullion dealers to get first shot at the new silver eagles. When you buy them 20,000 at a
time, it should not be hard to be first in line.

Well, I think they own ANACS now so they can pretty much produce any number of 70's they want.

I noticed that the labels on the slabs were listed as 2012, but the coins in the slabs were 2011.
How do they know the exact number of 70's they will get?

No relationship with the Mint, since these are not available to the public from the Mint, but only from the AP's. BTW...As mentioned before...they are PRE SALES.

HSN is definitely NOT one of the Mint's approved bulk dealers for precious metals. They probably are hooked up with one of the major buyers instead.

Just got an e-mail back from HSN, they are in fact pre-sales. The e-mail said, "I have reviewed both the ANACS and ICG 2012 MS70 First Day of Issue Limited Edition of 13,329 Silver Eagle Dollar Coins and our records indicate the order should be received on or about February 10, 2012." Strange that it is such an odd number, they must be doing that for marketing reasons.

Well it'd be a lot more suspicious of they announced that they had an even amount of 70's

Either amount is possible. Perhaps they were estimating from last years' numbers.

As I understand it, those companies have a pretty good handle on the percentages of 69 & 70's out of a green monster box. (plus it's not a bad idea to have a contract with a grading service so they know they are coming)

I know several people who have worked for ANACS, and they have told me similar stories- I'm not claiming this is true. The coins are submitted in HUGE quantities by the TV sellers, who tell them 'we need X amount of 70's from this batch'. Apparently, as part of the deal (for some lesser-value coins), ANACS gets to keep all the coins that fall below the requested grade(s). They use them in their sample slabs. This is why most of their samples the last few years have had proof 'Bison' nickels in them.

Honestly, if this is the case, I feel pretty good about the coins that do make 70, because there is an incentive for them to not give all of them that grade.

I would probably be less suspicious if it was an even number, I would figure they knew they would get at least X number of 70's, and if you are estimating they would find a round number that they were comfortable at selling.

I believe they said on the show that it was 1,000 and some less then they got the previous year.

But then again, in the next segment they were selling an ANACS MS/PF70 set, and said the only way you can get the set label on the none unique coins, is if you send the grading company the sealed boxes. Of course this was inaccurate, because ANACS did not require the sealed boxes to get the set label.

I guess you cannot believe everything you hear on the HSN. Who would have thought.
