To Collect Quarter Eagles AU 55-58 or Uncs??

I have toyed with the idea of collecting quarter eagles in either high AU or low Uncs.....

I like the idea of these coins having circulated (albeit lightly), but I am curious as to how easily obtainable high end AU's are....

Thoughts?

You'll pay a lot more for the AU 58s than the AU 55s 'cause of the Everyman Registry. I'd go low Uncs-- maybe MS62+s?

It all depends on you. Buy what you like. On the other hand, it depends on how deep your pockets are and what kind of "collecting" you want. Do you just want a few or do you want a date/MM set? Do you want Capped Bust 1/4 E's, or Liberty 1/4 E's, or Indian 1/4 E's?

Which set of Quarter Eagles? Indians I am guessing.

Why not do the entire AU spectrum? MS-62 isn't that quite a bit more then a AU?

I never liked the idea of committing to a specific condition. What if a gorgeous AU-58 came along at a great price, and you were collecting MS-63s? You are not going to buy it? Or vice versa?

If you are talking Liberty coronet QEs, it's a long and varied series with some dates that are extremely rare and/or expensive (or even unique) in AU and others that are relatively cheap through MS-64. It does not make sense to commit to a grade.

If you are talking about Indian QEs, they are all readily available in both high AU and low MS, and the price spread is not great, except for the 1911-D.

I'd go original XF-AU...the problem is that nice ones get snapped up and there are quite a few people with deep pockets doing the snapping. Monitor Doug Winter's site and see how long a nice AU stays on the list. I'd suggest after you make your decision, you contact a specialist dealer like Doug with a want list and try to get stuff before it hits a website.

Agree with RYK---collect the common dates in MS grades and the rare dates in nice AU grades. If you are talking Indian $2 1/2 gold coins, collect them in MS62 or 63 and buy the 1911-D in AU55 or 58 and save yourself a bunch of money. Also, buy your coins in top tier slabs since this denomination has been heavily counterfeited.

I should have been clear, the quarter eagle Indians are my choice....

Top tier (read PCGS) TPG is my preference in most coins nowadays. When I put together unc sets in Dansco's I bought raw and TPG.

I noticed the AU 58's were routinely overpriced IMHO - now I understand why, Everyman sets......

    Thanks for the input.....

I was going to say this but its already been said - totally agree with this, in fact I did just that. My AU58 1911-D looks pretty awesome next to the rest of the set in MS62-3. Neat little set, neat little coins. Just be patient, there's quite a difference in quality for the grade out there, you'll see what I mean. Also, look at a lot of coins before diving in, figure out if you like original looking surfaces or the clean ones. Different strokes for different folks. Make sure you've seen pleasing examples of each before you start. Most people want the coins in the series to match, so this is something to consider.

Well said RYK! That is called label collecting. Especially considering the inconsistency in grading buy the coin, NOT THE HOLDER!!!!!!

In my limited experience with quarter eagles, AU58 and MS62 both pack a lot of bang for the buck.
