Another FUN-Heritage Million Dollar coin? (Hammer: $1.38m)

With all the excitement on a 1793 MS-65 Large Cent possibly going for $1M+, do you think the coin below has the same chance?

Update (1/01/2012): Current price (with BP) $805,000

1829 Half-Eagle PCGS-PR64

    Proof? Interesting.

I would guess not a $1M coin, but really, it's simply a guess.

The PCGS price guide lists it at $1M

I say 60/40. But all it takes are two or more multimillionaires or billionaires with a strong interest.

The capped bust half eagle series has some of the great rarities in numismatics and i would guess that proofs in this condition are far rarer so yes it has a chance at breaking a million bucks.

Not with me even if I had the million $$. That has to be one of the worst portraits on a coin. Just not appealing at all IMO.

It certainly looks like a million dollar catalog description. image

Edit: I love those. My favorite is the Garrett 1815 which was sold at the FUN show two years ago. image

It may be one of the worst portraits aesthetically to some, personally I love it (much more than the capped bust motif). Owning any quarter or half eagle with that portrait is a numismatic accomplishment. That 1829 Proof would truely be a centerpiece of any collection. It might take out the $1M barrier.

That is a nice coin color and strikewise. Somehow that obverse portrait never really endeared itself to me. I wouldn't be above owning/buying it if there is a profit to be made tho. Not like I have an extra mil laying around gathering dust.

Interestingly enough, this coin isn't listed on the PCGS Registry as a $1M coin.
They do have a PR67 Lg Size and a PR66 Sm Size, but PR64 might not make the $1M mark afterall!
(Or PCGS just needs to reconsider adding this coin to that Reg Set Composition image )

Edited to add: For clarification, the PR67 is rumored to exist as a 1-sided proof, while the PR64 is
still considered a $1M (as per CoinFacts)

Current price with BP is $690,000.

Relatively speaking, that's not too far from $1,000,000 with a week to go!!!

I think the coin is outstanding, one I will view in hand hopefully at FUN. The heraldic eagle on the reverse is so cool.

The Mickley/ Garrett coin as noted by Heritage in their description. Interesting that it was classified as "mint state" in the Garrett sale.

When I grow up, I would love to collect these image

They have a lot going for them as a series. They are very rare, their numismatic value completely overshadows their intrinsic value, and they are under-appreciated. Every thing I love in a coin.

That said, my financial life would have to take a definite turn. This is one series I wouldn't touch without at least $10 mil to burn on it.

This is the million dollar coin, not the chain cent! Bet the chain only makes it to $600G.

There are many serious buyers of rare early gold to whom $1 million dollars does not mean much. I was I was related to any of them!

IMHO all pre 1830 proofs just dazzle me. They're all MADE TO ORDER coins for diplomats or well-healed collectors. Either some gubermint muckity muck said "strike a few proofs for the King of Wairizit" or some collector with lots of money and connections walked in the mint front door and said "anyone got some time to make me a couple proof half eagles?"

The 10-year-old-boy-coin-collector in me just thinks "Gee whiz NEATO" when I think of that image

Considering that "big money" collectors often have a representative at the auction to bid for them, and
do not bother with online bidding, I think it will go for at least 1.5 million. I also think the Chain cent will
easily exceed the 1 million mark. I will not be buying either one, of course. I just checked my coin buying
budget, and I am just a little short of the required funds.

All of those early half eagles are pretty neat to say the least. It is the most challengning series to collect. This is a real opportunity for the date collector to pickup some serious coins. I will be watching the action and will look for some post-auction analysis on this one.

The 1829 half eagle looks like an absolute stunner. The Heritage photos are actually very good -- maybe they do a better job on gold. The write-up is fascinating with all the confusion about whether some of the other 1829's are proofs or not. I think it makes for some interesting speculative bidding when you realize that there may or may not be a finer proof out there. It will be fun to follow and given the choice, i would have to go with this over the Saint (which is also a beauty).

The buyer of the 1921 $20 may be seeking this coin below. The coin shown below is the only one stickered by CAC in ms-66. There are none graded higher.

This photo was taken before it was .stickered.

I did not either. Before and after carefully inspecting them, I though about these two coins for some time. My article on the 1829 ‘Large Date’ will be published on Wednesday. I already wrote about the Eliasberg-Earle-Jung 1793 Chain Cent:
