Interesting Sample slab - Anyone recall the company Ruffco??

LakesammmanLakesammman Posts: 17,652 ✭✭✭✭✭
Bought a couple pieces with a plastic applied advertisement for Ruffco. They apparently ran afoul of the law in the early 1990's.

Anyone here have an example to post??

Anyone here ever done business with them??

RUFFCO OFFICIAL GETS STIFF PRISON TERM

Associated Press

David L. Keeffe has been sentenced to 33 months in prison and must pay full restitution to the 1,500 gold and silver investors defrauded of $4.8 million.

More than 250 of the investors wrote U.S. District Judge David Sam, demanding their money back and a harsh punishment for the former head of the Provo-based Ruffco financial services.Keeffe, 49, appeared for sentencing Thursday and asked Sam to spare him a prison term so he could get a job and begin repaying victims.

"I'm not a proponent of crime without punishment, but who would be served by my imprisonment?" he said.

Sam said many of Keeffe's victims were elderly people who invested their nest eggs, funds for their children's college educations, money for health-insurance premiums.

Despite Keeffe's pledge to make full restitution, the judge was dubious.

Keeffe has been selling cars in Great Falls, Va., but apparently is not earning much. His lawyer is court-appointed and paid by a government account.

Keeffe claimed he lost $2 million when Ruffco failed.

But prosecutor Stanley Olsen told the judge that Ruffco took in enough money for Keeffe to pay himself $7,200 a week.

Keeffe bought Ruffco from Howard Ruff in 1988. Ruff, who puts out a 20,000-circulation financial newsletter, was never a target in the criminal investigation of the missing millions in silver and gold, according to the FBI.

Agents got involved after hordes of Ruffco clients complained about the Ruffco bankruptcy and their missing investments in precious metals and valuable coins.

I (well my Dad) has a ruffco holder in the safe. It is an odd piece of plastic that holds 5 rattlers.

Do a search, there was some talk about them recently.

    Then I searched Google.

Finally found the PCGS thread, "Who dat".

Now, how are you supposed to find anything around here about Ruffco with a title like that?? image

I had several different samples with the Ruffco sticker, including some from ATS, but your story here is more than I knew before.

Was the company advertisement put on the slab by PCGS or was it added later by Ruffco? I'm guessing the later.

  • The original Ruff, in Ruffco, Howard Ruff, put out the popular "Ruff Times" newsletter back in the 70s and wrote a book titled, "How to prosper during the coming bad years". His basic premise was to hoard $1,000 bags of pre-1965 US silver coins. Lots of hype, and back during the time of the growth of the survivalist (apocalyptic?!) movement in the US. Also popular back then was "The Duck Book" (for those who recall) and the books of Robert J. Ringer. Ron Paul is an artifact from those days. (This is not a political thread!) Around the time of the great silver runup in 1979, this sort of literature was an underground hit.
  • Ditto to what Mark said!

    thanks.

It is just a peel off film type of sticker. Supposedly scarce.

Didn't know about the advanced search function - I'm a slow learner. Thanks for letting me know about it. image
