A lot OT - My dog died today

Lucky, my 16 year old female border collie/springer spaniel/mutt died today. She earned her name Lucky because my wife took her off the last day death row at the pound. I gave her the name Lucky, but it turned out that we are the lucky ones to have her. A great dog and friend, very easy to train. Loved my kids. Fetched my paper and mail for me, always there for a dog hug when anybody needed one, always went on the drop kids off to school and to then work commute with me. Always there.

Post a lucky coin, post an old coin, post a picture of your dog, or just anything.

I am sorry to hear of yours and your dog's loss. Lucky was extremely lucky.

I said goodbye to my cherished Golden, Mojo, this year at a way too early age of nearly 8 years.

My boy is still hunting and chasing; yet, sadly, not with me.

the loss of each one was heartbreaking.

I feel your pain ... and I know you have fond memories to help you heal.

We appreciate the animals that feel comfortable in our back yard. We don't feed them or anything. Well there was that one time my very young daughter shared Vienna sausages with a fox thinking it was a cat...

Anyway these are not our pets and we don't grow terribly attached to them.

Very, very sorry to hear of your loss claychaser

I have two dogs, one is a 10 yr. old mostly white mixed large breed who was recently diagnosed in Aug. with 3rd degree heart block and her heart rate is now only in the low 30's when it should be in the 80's. My other is a 17 yr. old 1/2 beagle, 1/2 c. spaniel who is diabetic (2 injections per day) and blind. I would easily give up my entire coin collection and any other material possessions to have another 10 yrs. with them, and right now I spend as much time with them both as possible.

I don't often respond to these threads as the emotion is huge and not something that the Boards need to hear. But . . . with Ginger under my feet right now and Lexie upstairs 'flarbed' out on the livingroom floor, I must . . . . . . .

I truly believe we will be judged by how we treat the canines with which we have been gifted.

I won't post a coin, or a picture. I will post a thought that every walk, talk, moment, fur-rub, and heart-to-heart you had with Lucky will come back to you in time and will be the anchoring element of your life here. Dogs are placed here to help us understand our mission in life, and yours was a gallant one. Remember that our hounds have a shorter life as they are without a capacity for sin and will wait for us patiently until we can join them again.

In time you will cavort through fields with Lucky . . . chasing toys and giving treats. What better 'heaven' could there be?

Stay strong and realize you did your best to make life rewarding for 'Lucky'. But 'Lucky' was both your treat and your test . . . and you passed admirably.

Tears flow here as well . . . . .

I was overseas on a business trip when we lost Basil almost 7 years ago. That sucked.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your family member. I know there will be many fond memories and good times that will live on. Dogs are always happy to see you and do bring out the best in every one that are in their circle. After a tough day, having your buddy there to greet you like you are the best owner and person ever. The fact that you save Lucky from a fateful demise is the luckiest part of all.

This is Butch. He was my best friend in the world from about 7th grade on. This was taken in 1980.

His mom was a full bred Hungarian Vizsla, not sure what his dad was. I miss ole Butch.

So sorry to hear of your lost, its been alittle over 14 months since I lost my Lucky dog named for the same reason she was saved from a local shelter. And Like you said I thought it was me saving her and in the end it was her saving me. I miss that dog still and wish you and your family the best........tom

I never question the loyalty of my dog, he was my grandmother's guard dog when she was alive. These days he zealously guards my three daughters. I have come to appreciate him a lot more than most family members. I remember thinking my grandmother spoiled him, letting him lounge on the furniture, the beds etc. Guess what... a decade later he is doing the same stuff in my house and I will even move off the sofa if he comes up and wants my spot. He has earned his kibbles. I even cook special meals for him, rice and veggies are good for doggies.

It's tough losing a pet. I lost my german shepherd a few years back and he was only 7 years old. Still miss him.

It is very tough losing such a great friend. I lost my buddy of 14 years on Christmas Eve 2010. I still miss him greatly, but his presence is still around. You'll find yourself looking for him and expecting him in all the usual places. You'll also find yourself laughing out loud at all the good and funny times you had together. Best wishes to you.

Go back to that pound and find Lucky II- it will help and you will save one from the death squad.

Claychaser, I am so very sory to hear of your losing your great friend. My family and I had to endure the same thing not too long ago (actually, it was over 2 yearsaho, and the wound still feels as if it happened yesterday. Losing ones best friend is a tragedy, honestly. Dogs give an unconditional love that is unparalleled. In return, they only require an extra belly-rub, ior scratch behind the ear, or whatever Lucky's favorite thing that made her tail wag was. I can only give you this advice, as it tore me apart, literally, for months...was inconsolable (it still braks me down to see pics of him, or hear his name). The damage will never quite go away...think of the good times.....16 years was a good, long run, and you must have TONS of great memories (we lost ours at only 3 1/2, so, it's harder for me, thinking of the times we SHOULD have had, that we were robbed of). Honor Lucky in any way you can, keep a stiff upper lip, and please consider another rescue. The new rescue will never be able to fully heal your broken heart, but it CAN patch it up enough that you'll be able to smile when thinking of Lucky, instead of getting dragged back down to that ugly place (sometimes, I swear, I can see some of my Duke in our rescue, Boomer...rescue the same breed, Australian Shephard, which is very similar to a border collie, jst that a border collie has a tail)... and while it hurts, it does make me smile. Keep pics around, and even her favorite toy, in a special place.

My most heartfelt condolences to you and your entire family, as it just delivers such a hurtful pain to everyone that was lucky enough to have Lucky bring joy into their lives. Again, my heart really goes out to you, it's the WORST time of year for this to happen (there never is a 'good time', or 'right time' for a tragedy such as this). I hope you are able to put this pain 'in it's place' in due time. Good luck.....

How sad. Sorry to hear about Lucky's passing, claychaser. Dogs are so easy to love, and losing them is so very hard. My condolences.

You would be honoring Lucky by acquiring another doggie soon. I know it doesn't feel right to some folks but it was the right remedy for my wife and me when we lost our lovable rottie a few years ago.

I'm so very sorry for the loss of your beloved pet. My mixed breed "rescue dog" Shadow was a true member of my family, died 3/31/10 at age 13 and I still miss him. He was my Velcro Dog and my favorite Frisbee player. Here's a couple from 2007 when he was still so full of life.

And my son's Lab, Sadie, taken 2 1/2 years ago with my granddaughter while we were husking corn in the back yard (he lives next door). Unfortunately Sadie went with his ex-wife when she left, and we really miss her too... alot more than the ex.

Sammy - a rescue mutt who is a mix of Pit Bull and Yellow Lab. We nicknamed him "Mercedes" because the few few months we had him he was running us a "Mercedes payment" a month at the vet!

Sarah - my running buddy who is an Australian Shepherd. She sings to me whenever I come home by following me around and softly howling!

If you love dogs, read Dean Koontz book "The Watchers." It's a great story without much of the typical Dean Koontz horror content. Thanks to Drunner (Jeff) for the GREAT book recommendation.

I have two awesome Australian Shepherds. The thought of this is too much.

But we get these wonderful pets with an unwritten contract that we understand that in 8-16 years our hearts will be broken. Somehow we're supposed to soldier up when it happens but we aren't that "evolved" yet. I'm actually glad we aren't. Everyone gets it.

Only dog lovers know how sad the loss of a pet friend is and my heart goes out to you. We lost our 14 year old Shelty Rudy a year ago and I miss him every day. But... ayear has gone by and a few weeks ago we welcomed Spanky into the family. Wait awhile and when it feels right get another four legged, fur faced buddy. Spanky gets us back up to three Shelties
