My daughter loves photography, and got a new flash for Christmas, so we did some experiments with moving the flash around. This is the best we could do, though it still doesn't really capture the coin's appearance in hand. I didn't realize how hard it was to get a good pic!

For shooting coins you really shouldn't use a flash. Just give it lots of steady light from other sources. Your results will be better.

Of course you don't want to spoil her fun with the new flash. The family pet is a good target.

Not bad! But if you search these boards for coin photography, you'll find that using flash is not the ideal lighting. I'd also recommend Mark Goodman's Numismatic Photography: 2nd Edition. An excellent primer for coin photography.

You'll also note that there are a number of professional coin photographers who post on here. Lot's of good photography info at your fingertips.

Glad you picked up Mark Goodmans Numismatic Photography An excellent resource BTW.

FWIW I got your PM, but I don't think you got my reply. You need to turn on your PMs to receive incoming messages. Just click on the 'profile' button (upper right margin of the main message screen here) and then click the radio circle to "ON" for "Allow Private Messages"

Agreed. This is a great start though and better than a lot of the shots out there! You just need to make it "pop" a little more.

Definitely wouldn't use a flash when shooting coins. I'm no expert, but a secondary (or 2 secondary) light sources will work better. Also it gives a TON more control

But for sure you'd do better with some external lights. That way you could see what sort of exposure you'd be getting ahead of time instead of guessing or letting the camera adjust the flash level.
