Anyone know what causes the dull gray appearance here. Have seen it on other Morgans as well.

It looks like it was on an end of roll and the oils from finger touches on the exposed part have dulled the luster of the years.

I have seen others that were touched only for a brief time and later developed a similar look. (I'm much more careful now than when I began this hobby!)

My guess too. You can see signs of a print.

This one from last night appears to have some of the same dullness with no end roll toning or prints.

I would question the endroll tarnish... I do not question that (IMO) it is ugly....Cheers, RickO

End roll. That roll has been intact for a very long time.

Usually the straight line is a dead giveaway for endroll toning. The darkness on this coin suggests it has been exposed for a long time. I kinda like it myself. Wonder what it looks like in hand.

That dusty grey you see is silver oxide. The color is a thin film of silver sulfide which light can pass through easily, is reflected and refracted causing the colors. Light does not easily pass through silver oxide so it appears dull and grey.
