I think I kickstarted a kid's interest in coins yesterday...

My friend stopped by with his sons for a visit yesterday and his eldest (8 yrs old) saw my brand new Heritage catalog sitting on the table. As he flipped through it his eyes got wider and wider. I asked if he ever knew that the U.S. had made 2-cent, 3-cent, and 20-cent coins in the past. He said no so I showed him those and some half-dimes and half-cents as well. We discussed how much some of the coins he saw were worth and why and all he could keep saying was "COOL!". He then asked me if he could keep the catalog and I gladly said he could.
He then told me that he had a Buffalo Nickel at home and some foreign coins in weird shapes. It happens that I have an old box of miscellaneous raw coins inherited mostly from my grandfather, both U.S. and foreign, so I pulled it out and let him look through it. I gave him some steel cents, an SBA dollar, a SAC dollar, and some random Canadian, UK, German , Russian, and South American stuff to keep. He was super excited and left feeling like Christmas had come early.
I also discovered along the way that I have some really interesting and old (~100 y.o.) Darkside stuff in that box, which I haven't really looked through in 15 years or so. As part of my 2012 numismatic to do list, I will have to go through it all and post photos here and see if they're worth anything.
His dad was worried because he says once his son gets interested in something he really locks onto it. I told him all collectors are like that
