Counting change - how weird is this?

LanLordLanLord Posts: 11,754 ✭✭✭✭✭
This morning, I'm gathering up all the loose change which sits on the counter,
I dropped a handful of coins, and a nickel landed like this.

Now, in The Twilight Zone, I'd have a 30 minute episode, but what does this mean for me?
Pretty weird though huh?

I guess what's really weird is how funky that pattern on the counter top looks this close up!

    Hey, that's cool!

I recently looked up the odds of heads or tails when flipping coins and heads aren't exactly 50%. Partly because every blue moon a coin lands like yours did!

Yeah, Darrin Stephens (the original Darrin, not that replacement Dick Sargent) played in it.

The odds of this happening are roughly 1 in 6000.

You don't have to take my word for it - here you go.

Received 9 March 1993; published in the issue dated October 1993

An experiment is reported in which an object which can rest in multiple stable configurations is dropped with randomized initial conditions from a height onto a flat surface. The effect of varying the object’s shape on the probability of landing in the less stable configuration is measured. A dynamical model of the experiment is introduced and solved by numerical simulations. Results of the experiments and simulations are in good agreement, confirming that the model incorporates the essential features of the dynamics of the tossing experiment. Extrapolations based on the model suggest that the probability of an American nickel landing on edge is approximately 1 in 6000 tosses."

...i wonder if this would have happened if it was the (maybe) future steel nickel? image

I can tell you this...I'd save that coin, put it in one of those round holders and carry it around in my pocket all the time. Thats a hell of a conversation piece.

What it means for you is that you might consider wiping down the counter more often to mop up those errant blobs of jamimage

Or, you'd better get out and get those lottery tickets!!!! My Son actually won two scratch tickets in a row one lucky day!

I once saw a man balance a nickel on the RUNNING engine of a 1950 Packard. Running.

That episode is called "A Penny for your Thoughts"
That would be fun at a coin show.

    It's this episode
