New 1916 SLQ purchased

First off, no I didn't cherrypick this one in a lot....lol. This one is an upgrade to my previous ANACS G-4. ALthough it's almost the same detail as my g4 had, it has much more visible date! It also has a great lightly tanned toning look to it, very original. The surfaces are exceltional for seeing this much circulation! About 75% of the date remains! ANACS gave her a VG8, which seems about right, though I would say this is a lower/mid end VG8. This is the highest grade I've owned yet, and after handling a half dozen dateless slugs, it's nice to have one that is fully identifiable by the date. :-)

That has a great look to it. I'm going to find one of those someday in a pile of 90%.

    Wow.

    Great coin.

So did all of the five cherrypicked slicks pay for that one?

Y'know, it being avatar day, you really should make a 1916 SLQ your new icon instead of your (attractive but much more commonly seen) Morgan dollar. image

    Nice coin!
Regardless of the assigned grade. having a visible date on this issue makes a world of difference when comparing it to the ubiquitous "dateless slugs."
However, considering the high price, a dateless coin for many collectors is the most economical way to finish a set, unless they settle for a damaged example.

IMO anyone consider the purchase of a keydate should tend to avoid anyone not in a top 2 (1) slab if the have any thought to resale value at a later date. Dealers rarely want to play "let's make a deal" on the sell side but will bend you over on their buy side unless the coin is very very nice due to their lack of wanting play the uncertain crack out game.

The coin it's self isn't that big of an upgrade from the ones you already had form the looks of it but is over all nice.

Thank you all for your comments!

lordmarcovan: Actually, the one in my other post I sold and put that money towards the VG8, and I traded him my ANACS G4 and a couple other lower valued coins. I think your right, I really do need to change my avatar!

veryfine: Thanks for the comment! I hope you do realize that I use the term "dateless slugs" with the upmost affection. Finding these and rescuing them from silver junk bags has probably been the greatest joys I've experienced as a numismatist. And I absolutely agree that they are great ways for someone to complete a set on a lower budget. 2 of them I traded to good friends of mine for that very reason.

Crypto: While I agree that the top 2 make a huge difference in resale value for high end coins, I don't see much difference on lower end keys. Heritage auction results show no discernable value difference for VG 1916 slq sales between ANACS and PCGS...and there is no obvious difference in grading standards at that range either imho(as they both can be all over the map). I see larger variances within a TPG based on the timeframe in which it was graded. Just my opinion from studying low grade 1916s intently for several years. Dealers may be a different story though, I do 90% of my buying and selling online.
