New Toy: Testing out my $55.00 digital microscope

I ordered a Barska PC 10x-300x Power Digital Microscope a few weeks ago when someone here on the forum mentioned that Newegg was selling them for $55 or so.
It has been sitting on my desk since it arrived. Today I decided to give it a test run.
It is very simple. The device is about the size of a cigar, plus the USB cable that was included. It plugs into a USB port on your PC.
That's all there is to it!
I fooled around with it with a coin that was on my desk. I held it with my hand at various distances (that's why these photos are a little blurry).
Literally it was 5 minutes from the time I took it out of the box to the time I saved these images to my computer.
I'm sure I can improve the photo quality. But it was easy & fun taking these...

I was shocked at how simple it was.
You plug the thing into your computer. It automatically turns on. You open a window where you can see an image of what the camera sees -- live. When you like what you see, you press the button on top of the device.
You can then choose to save the image -- or not.
No software to install or download. Even a chimp like me was able to do it with ease.
It comes with 6 LED lights that surround the camera lens as well.

the 2 i have used for a couple years now are live feed
you can use a simple program like "snip" that is included with vista and win7 to take multiple images quickly and easily
some of the digi-scopes can take images and do all kinds of things depending on the software included.
my primary scope has no bells & whistles at all but is my favorite one and has helped make and save a lot of money, plus it is fun to use
the other one has a phenomenal software program but only goes to 200x and not 300x and that just happens to be a big difference
but for expert level microscopic study the 200x software package has some features that would be on par with pcgs laboratories authentication labs
once you get used to it and add a little creativity, you will be amazed at how user friendly they are
.
there are a few forum members that achieve nearly the same results with their camera/lens/software setup with amazing clarity, love to have paid lessons from them for photography
.
if you have the chance to get a digi-scope with a stand, i highly recommend it for numerous reasons
.
Have you tried imaging through a slab?
Nice pix....
Need to work a bit on the contrast a bit I think, but you can easily see the RPM.
Thanks

it can be done but is a little more difficult because of that gap between plastic and coin surface

edit to add,, get one with a stand if you cannot fabricate one yourself. It's a set it and forget it deal then.
They're going to be sold out after all of us buying them up!!
I'm in too

Anybody else find them cheaper? It appears the newegg sale is over.
didn't feel like registering a new acct. and/or throw my debit card around the internet any more than it is...
I can't wait to play around with it.
<< <i>Nice change that you have laying around on your desk. >>
That was my first thought!

It does a pretty decent job through the slab. Not bad for the price and very nice for varieties and such.

Thanks for the tips...
I'll consider this route though i might be more inclined to put that money into optics that would work directly with the mac.
I really don't 'need' any of it, but could more easily get away with buying the less expensive option.

This digi scope looks quite attractive...
It has been well worth the $200 investment, even though I probably haven't used it in about a year!

<< <i>Can someone tell me how to use this on windows 7? What software you use to show the picture on the screen? I installed the software that came with the barska but it really sucks and I am not able to take pictures with the button while using their software.
Thanks >>
I tried it on my Vista laptop and had to install the software that came on a disk....not very happy with that move since it starts every time I turn on my computer. I also found that it was NOT easy to remove. It did work but not worth the invasive program..I returned it....
Sounds like it works better on an XP machine....

There is an option in settings to keep it from starting when windows loads. I just do not like the size of the picture on the program and it feels clunky to me, it works just not as good as I would have wanted it to.
