Yes, I want to see that Jefferson out of the cello. BOTH sides please.

Glad you got a good proof set and not washers.

Have you checked the nickel for the Doubled Die Obverse variety? Doubling evident on In God We Trust.

    Good luck.

Why not certify the entire set? You will have a consecutively numbered original set with a nice story.

<< <i>what does this have to do with 25th Anniversary sets and are people allowed to just make threads like this that push the ASE ones lower? I for one say shenanigans, this isn't what this forum is meant for. >>

Good one! I think more people should do this. Live action. You gotta love it. That's why I often try to post "action dig shots" showing the coin comin' outta the ground when I do my metal detecting stories.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

    OK, more crappy pics.

The nickel shows cameo contrast and mirrors on both sides. I have an 1958 NGC 67CAM nickel and this one has better contrast. Will PCGS grade it CAM? We'll find out.

Here's the half. The pics show the toning pretty well. It also has a touch of cartwheel effect.

I'll try to get some better pics, maybe with the coins out of the flip, which may help, although my crappy picture taking skills may not be overcome. image

As much as I wish I could tell you the nickel would CAM, I have a hard time thinking you'd get that designation without dipping it first. And even with that, I'm not sure the fields will be deep enough (as far as I can tell from the photos).

Did you check the cent to see if it was a DDO?

<< <i>As someone has mentioned before, cameos tend to come together in "runs." As such, I am sure that the seller knows this this too, and given the volume of proof material that he deals with, I wouldn't anticipate that the odds of finding cameos are high at all. If you have additional unopened sets, then I would recommend that you resell them without opening them! >>

The runs and the date(on the box) of them are the giveaway....good post.

<< <i>Since this thread is taking so long to play out, I thought I would chime in on my own newest proof set hunting expedition. I stopped by a local B&M today to snoop. I saw a 1954 proof set in a Capital holder. The clear outer layers of the holder are scuffed up, beat up, cloudy in appearance and the back side has tape reside on it. On top of that, the three silver coins have developed a very heavy white milky haze on both sides. All together these things make it very hard to get a good look at the coins in the holder.

Drawing upon vast knowledge and experienceimage gained after years in the trenches and muck looking for jewels amongst the dross, dreck and droppings of modern cr*p, I lloked closely at the three silver coins, with a loupe, under the brightest overhead light I could find in the shop. Applying my genetically encoded "supervision" to the outerlayers of the holder and to the milky haze on the three coins, I determined that all three have:

    1. significant frost on the devices on both sides of the coins;

    2. possibly, just possibly, black watery mirrored fields.

In otherwords, I may have found a silver Cameo trifecta hiding in plain sight. Even better would be a tio of coins with minimal or no hairlines.

The nickel and cent are so obscured by the damaged holder that I can not even get a good view of them. Maybe they will also be nice.

I will am picking up the set tomorrow and can hardly wait to liberate the three coins from the damaged holder; and to possibly remove the milky haze.

Back to the OP, I hope he scores some DCAM's in the unopened 53 set. >>

Make sure you check that "4" on the date of the dime for the dd variety image

What does your 54 set look like?

Grades popped today. Wow, I wasn't expecting them for another 2-3 weeks. Not sure what to make of them. Here they are:

    1c PR65RD

    5c PR67+

    50C PR64

I really thought the Jeff would Cam, but the 67+ is pretty good none the less. Probably got the + due to the contrast.

I thought the cent would get 66RD.

I guess the half had a few more hairlines than I thought.

Overall, I won't recoup my costs. I'll have to chalk it up to entertainment value. image
