Guess the grades- Bust halves

rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,650 ✭✭✭✭✭
All of these are coins were purchased raw, but are now in PCGS holders. Guess the grades!

Hints: None of them are graded "Genuine." All coins were submitted only once. Photos were taken with an inexpensive digital camera with ordinary lighting, and therefore won't look as nice as PCGS True Views.

You can check your answers instantly by looking up the cert. numbers, but please don't post the grades PCGS assigned and spoil the game for others.

1805 11925847

1817 14744963

1820/19 16053861

1827 16053865

Ummmm, while I was thinking VF-20 for the 1805 (netted to F-15 for an old cleaning/dip), it should not have been given the grade PCGS assigned it.

I was satisfactorily close on the other 3

I'm going to grade largely on details and less on the quality of the surfaces because of the lighting used. Also, no consideration is given to die marriage characteristics.

    1805; VF20
    1817; EF40
    1820; VF25
    1827; AU50

Now I'll check to see how badly I've been schooled.image

wow, i am surprised. they all look cleaned to me (with the 17 and the 27 having re-toned). but, i guess that shows what i know about this series...not much apparently. image

Let's reconsider the 1805 for a moment. How do you feel about its grade after seeing these pics? These were taken with a better camera, albeit sill a cheap digital SLR camera.

yeah, that photo definitely makes a difference. i still say it's been cleaned before, but there's a difference between market acceptable and just plain cleaned. i get that. however, what about the 1820? convince me on that one. please don't take offense. i need education. you obviously have a good eye buying these raw and receiving grades on all of them.

It's actually as original as you can hope for in person. It's still a comparatively poor photo!

I am amazed how much the photo quality and lighting can make a difference in peoples' opinions. On average, each coin has been undergraded by 10 points so far!

Lighting definitely plays a major role in our grades, but I think what also plays an important role is the fact that these grades are all single data points that could move either way upon subsequent regrades and this movement might make some guesses appear more accurate.

The coins are graded accurately. The only one that might go down 5 pts. upon re-submission is the 1820/19. No chance on the others.

"Accurately" graded does not mean that the grade cannot change upon resubmission.image

    First impressions were 15/40/20/50

The 20 is unevenly struck so gives me trouble.

The 1805 probably gets a pop for being an 1805 and could be a 20 or 25, but I don't see it as a 30 or above.

    First impressions.

    10
    45
    30
    50

Now that I look again perhaps the DBH should be a bit higher.

BTW, the first pics of the DBH appear to be much more worn due to the washed out look. Judging by the second set of pics I would put the grade higher 20-25.
