are NOT found in circulation in any appreciable amounts.

I do believe at least 75% of the total mintage on these pieces has been hoarded.

    Why would they be hoarded?

I would agree. Lots of Shield Cents here in Pittsburgh, but very scarcely am I seeing any of the 2009 commemorative cents.

Fairly common around here... not as common as the memorials. I just pulled all the change out of my pocket... out of 17 cents.. four were 2009's. Cheers, RickO

I can see holding the 2009 Mint sets because they have the low mintage copper cents, but the others...

Wasn't the mintage total like 2.3 BILLION for the zinc ones? Can't imagine anyone would hoard them.

Now the COPPER ones are different. I have a BUNCH of those sets.

I think the same thing happened in 1909 that's why we have an abundance of uncirculated vdb s. Ricko I think your 4 of 17 is an anomaly and would be interested in others doing a pocket change survey. I just went 0 for 11.

A habit my Dad started with me has a few coin tubes on the dresser for certain issues, one of which is the 2009 Lincoln cent, 2010, and 2011.

I've got nearly a full tube of 2011's... about 1/3 a tube of 2010, and 3 - count 'em - THREE 2009 cents, all of which were accumulated over the past 18 or so months...

What does THAT tell you? image

Tells me that they might not be circulating in your area. Just for the Hell of it, I grabbed 2 handfulls of change from my change jar and checked them. out of 57 cents minted after 1982 (coppers go in other jar) 11 were 2009's.
Who's to say there aren't millions of these in Fed vaults somewhere. Probably have bags of unwanted dollar coins stacked on top of them.

It's hard to imagine someone would hoard 1.8 billion cents.

Stupidly (or so I thought at the time, but boy was I wrong), I bought three complete sets of 'Ceremonial' Lincoln cents(much like the FDOI) in PCGS MS66RD sets, from a national dealer not well liked here (at the time, I thought I could 'cash in' on the Lincoln craze...took a big chance with them, I thought). Each 8 coin set was, $129 each (just about 100% positive). I held the C&C set, then thought I saw a top on the C&C set, which, as it turned out, it was. I sold that C&C set, then decided to list the 8 coin sets to see if there was any interest in them. I was up a few bucks, on each set, with 10 mins to go (was just hoping to break even after fees, and get rid of them...I have 2 mint sets and 2 proof/silver proof sets). Those sets wound up bringing about $375 each after FVF and PP fees. Bidding went absolutely nuts in the last 60 seconds. Same buyer for all three sets. I have to think (I know) the buyer is/always will be, buried in them, with the amount of 67RD sets. I NEVER expected them to get THAT high, just crazy high...but people were buying anything/everything Lincoln in '09.

Those sets, plus the C&C set, plus the LP-1's.....I admit, I did pretty darn good for buying/selling '09 Lincoln cents (too much time went by for it to be officially called flipping). The Lincoln craze lasted pretty much all year, from what I recall. The LP-2's, they were hot also, for the DD's (LP-2's are not commanding near any premium, too many DD's, IMO, and the LP-1's are at a minimum, as are the C&C sets...still fetching more than issue, but not even close to as much as they were bringing at their peak)...but boy, did I love those 2009 'Ceremony' Lincoln sets in 66RD! And that was shortly after the killing I made on the '08 Rev '07 ASE's (and I did not receive ONE '08 Rev '07 from the mint, but thanks to John Nanney's thread, I picked up a bunch at $99...same dealer, I think...haven't called that number since....seemed like the next day, those '08 Rev '07's were at $499).

But, none found in circulation at all. I agreewith ambro, as far as the high % of hoarding. They could be considered the new SHQ.. Same deal....moon money, then back to earth PDQ.
    I'll come up with something.

I have a Machine wrapped roll of Bicentennial Quarters I've had since 76. I have $10 invested in it.
Not counting inflation they're still worth $10.

Some variety collectors have saved the 2009-p & d formative years because of the Double die rev on the hand.
I myself have unc rolls of the different DDR varieties.Check out (COPPERCOINS.COM) for pics & info.
