I've wanted to do this ever since it was cancelled 4-5 years ago.
And NOW that I am skipping the show this year they bring it back!

I was a previous finalist (collector's division) several years ago and had a blast! I never did travel to the west coast for the finals, however. I heard that they had a bunch of one-of-a-kind, high end coins, in the final.

Are they going to give a date the coins were graded? There is a 2+ grade variation between how the identical coin would grade over time. My recommendation would be to get the top 3-5 specialist dealers in certain areas, have them form a consensus grade and see if the PCGS graders are even close to the actual grade.

PCGS was kind enough to mail me the results of my try at the contest. I got 5 right out of 20. The winner got 8. It was a fun experience!

    I was high by a + on 1 coin
I was high by one grade on 4 coins
I was high by two grades on 1 coin
    I was low by a + on 1 coin
I was low by one grade on 5 coins
I was low by two grades on 3 coins
    When in doubt, don't.

No doubt, really close, but only in horseshoes, hand grenades, and cornhole.

We're doing it again at the Long Beach show, Feb 2-4 and giving another MS65 Saint as a prize.

We're also having a kids contest on Saturday Feb 4 (prize is an MS65 Morgan dollar).

It's somewhat unusual to see a well known PCGS authorized dealer consistently bagging on PCGS here on the forum. So if your 2+ grade variation over time theory is correct, are you saying a PCGS coin graded a MS63+ in the past would be an MS66 today, or vice versa?

I picked up my scoresheet today as well.

    3 correct.
missed two by the designation only (copper color and forgot to write cameo on the proof dime),
    missed 5 by 1/2 point (4 low, 1 high. Silly +)
    missed 6 by 1 grade (3 high, 3 low)
    missed 1 by 1 1/2 point low
missed 3 by 2 grades -- two of these were the "AU61" gold, one of which was 58, the other was 61, and I had them reversed. The other was the F15 SLQ I graded VG10.

HRH: <<We're also having a kids contest on Saturday Feb. 4, prize is an MS65 Morgan dollar.>>

This is an excellent idea. Certainly, such a contest may generate additional interest in coins among kids and could be a lot of fun. When I was a kid, I may have very much enjoyed a grading contest.

I was disappointed to learn that being a "Coin Facts" member does not qualify for being allowed to compete. image

    Mr Jones,

CoinFacts subscribers should certainly be allowed to compete. I'll fix that.

Do you have to be a PCGS member to participate? My shop is as a whole, but not me personally. In other words we are a PCGS member under the shop name.

I asked at the PCGS booth at the begging of the show and was told, "No."
