Neat penny roll find...
I've been going through penny rolls, pulling wheats, looking for die varieties, and plugging away at a little circ. penny book the past few weekends... mindlessly hypnotic but it's fun and keeps me out of trouble for a couple hours on end...
The last box I opened had a whole bunch (just about a roll) of BU 1975s... nothing special BUT this little guy was tucked in there...
pretty cool little planchet flaw... I like that you can see the "S" still stamped below where the chunk is hanging...
my first error... makes me want to keep cracking rolls b/c you never know what you'll find!

as a side note, one of my students (8th grade) has been getting more and more into coins this year.. he loves pennies so I told him to go to the bank, get a few rolls, and see what he can find... so he borrows $10 from his mom and starts cracking rolls... comes in the next day w/ about 25 wheats incl. a 1909, 1909 VDB (both in F-VF), couple from the teens, and a pair of BU RD 1956 issues. I was shocked and he's getting hooked...

it's tough to tell from the picture but in hand you can see a darkened streak extending through Lincolns head and ending above the "E" in Liberty (about even w/ his ear) where the planchet is a different color... this "damage" is at the end of that streak...
no idea how it all happened or how that piece stayed attached (esp after being run though a rolling machine at some point and seeing some circulation)... it's hanging on by a thread but fits back into the depression perfectly...
is that S raised or recessed?
Neat find.
Edit: if it was PMD the metal couldn't have been peeled away without removing any indication of the underlying stamped letter.
it's a simple lamination on
a struck coin. Not PMD.
Improper metal mixture led
to the planchet flaking or
peeling - in this case, the
process was 'completed' after
the coin was struck.

I was noticing the "S" that resides between the intact U and T. It is not deformed. The hanging piece is flatish. This leads me to believe it was struck this way instead of gouged out. Gosh I sure am smart when I already know the answer!
It also shows what happened to TRUST in the government after the Vietnam and Watergate eras, too, huh.
Cool find!
