eBay and escalated cases...
Ok, I just have to post this, 'cause I am completely done with eBay right now.
I bought an item on eBay on November 6th, instantly paid for it. Seller sent the item, arrived three days later. The item was not as described, and I wanted to return it, since the seller advertised a three day return policy and I contacted him the next day. All would be fine, right?
Well, not. I contacted seller saying that I wanted to return it, but he then claimed immediately that the return policy had already expired since he sent the item 4 days ago and there only was a three day return policy. Yeah sure. So I contacted eBay, seller then claimed that the post office tried to deliver the item for two days (sure...except that the tracking info never showed that), but that it couldn't be delivered because I wasn't home to receive the item. Very weird, because I actually stayed home to get it.
So, since the seller refuses to accept its own advertised return policy, I escalate the case. Off course I have to call eBay, but the case is immediately decided in my favor. Shipping label is issued by eBay and I drop it off at the post office the same day.
Item first doesn't show up in the USPS tracking for a week, then finally does, goes to UPS and finally gets delivered two weeks later (past Wednesday). In the meantime I have stayed in constant contact with eBay and I have been told that once the item is delivered I will immediately get my refund. According to I think the second lady I talked to (who issued the shipping label) it would be best to call once it gets delivered since it usually takes a few days for the system to picks it up. Sure.
So, a few hours after it gets delivered this past Wednesday I call eBay. All of the sudden I'm told that the seller now has 72 hours to send me a refund, or to reply back to them with any comments. So, this afternoon, after 72 hours, I call again. Now supposedly the seller has another 72 hours to issue a refund, after which eBay will step in and issue a refund, but that could take another 2 weeks.
We are talking about a $895 purchase and I have been out of that money for almost a month now. I hear very inconsistent stories, have talked to several people at eBay and PayPal, and have no idea if and when I get my money back. In the meantime the seller has the item back and listed it on eBay already...I've sent him a few messages to request the refund, he doesn't reply, and I even tried calling him.
Argh! $895 is a lot of money for me (I had planned to sell the item for a few hundred bucks profit, if it had been as described) but I'm out of it so far. I've left negative feedback but that doesn't help much....
Anything else I could do...?

<< <i>Who was the seller, Dennis? Inquiring minds want to know (for obvious reasons) >>
I agree! I don't want to make the same mistake.
I've been in a simliar situation multiple times, all for $2k+
Actually, when I purchase something large on ebay I just expect the worse, just in case.
The good news, you will definitely get the money back, so in the end you WILL win.
It does really suck. Good luck.
It's "505steven2011"...

That is when I stop caring. Sorry to hear you couldn't find someone to
give you a few hundred bucks.
Never mind...I noticed you did. BTW seller is peddling the same note again...and I suspect with the same write-up

If it was as described I could have easily made a profit and I would have been happy with the item. There were, however, hidden defects not in the picture nor in the description.
Sorry if I hurt your feelings by hoping to make a little bit extra $$ of something off eBay.

Seriously? Please let me know when you go to resell something and ask more than $10 over your cost.
Regarding this issue, if ebay is giving you the run around, call your credit card company, show proof that the item was delivered back to the seller, and they will issue you a refund.

I know there is one guy I sold coins to that leaves ebay feedbacks like this, "A++ GOOD EBAY SELLER ..... FILPED IT FOR 500 ALREADY- THANKS!!!!". So, i have blocked him. Wouldn't annoy any dealer if your customer comes back the next day and tells how much more money he just made off you? Thanks what Im talking about.

I recently sold an 1860-d $5 gold coin on ebay for $3,250......The buyer turned around and sold the coin last week on ebay for $7,100. That's the way life is sometimes. He didn't throw the fact that he made soo much back at me, it would not have been nice.
Anyway, I will say this; lately Ebay has gotten way, way better on the phone. The "support specialists" that I've talked to have been very communicative and have even followed up with me after the fact to make sure that everything was taken care of. I still don't think that ebay is run very well, and the trouble one has to go through to escalate claims is ridiculous, seeing as this is such a huge part of their business. I'm just glad that at least it appears like they are making an effort to do better when you call them. Even so, I couldn't sleep at night until I had the money back in my Paypal account. I try not to value money so highly, but it's hard no matter what to go through something like this.
In the end, I think it's an executive decision way high up for eBay to not get involved in the disputes and wash their hands of it as much as possible. I sure learned a lot from my ordeal and actually came away with it with a little bit higher opinion of eBay. It's probably just relative though, since they have been so bad in the past. The little more effort they are putting in now is a good first step.
<< <i>If the case really drags out AND you paid via credit card (through PayPal), you can start a case

Careful with this, once you open a case with your CC company, eBay or Paypal will automatically close the case you opened with them.
