My first submission - Grades In First Post!

CircOnlyCircOnly Posts: 2,227 ✭✭✭✭
Well, I have been collecting Barber halves in F-VF for a small amount of time now, and I figured it was time to put my grading to the test. Most of these coins are common, but I really enjoy this series, and I wanted to use this as a learning experience. I have few more raw sitting in my Dansco waiting for plastic tombs, but I figured 8 was enough for my first time submitting.

1) 1898-S Bought from a dealer at the Pitt ANA. The dealer warned me he felt it was a VG10 coin, and I trust his expertise. I just like the coin so much I wanted to take the shot at an F-12
2) 1899 Bought from another forum member. This is a strong F15 coin in my opinion.
3) 1902 Bought from the same forum member. A very crusty piece that should make F15 on it's worst day. I hope for a VF20.
4) 1903-S Again, from the same member. A lighter coin with good detail. I expect a VF20 grade but would not be surprised with a VF25 grade.
5) 1905-S Another raw purchase from the Pitt ANA. I feel this coin has a strong chance at an F15, but wouldn't be disappointed with an F12 grade.
6) 1908 A raw purchase from the Philly Whitman show this year. I think it has a good chance at VF20.
7) 1910-S Bought from the same forum member as mentioned above. This coin has all the best qualities in a F-VF Barber half. I would like a VF20, but I feel it's a strong F15.
8) 1913-D Bought from the same forum member above, I belive this coin should get a VF20, but wouldn't be surprised if it got a F15.

As always, grades are subjective, and I plan on absorbing as much as I can out of this experience. Of course if I get a body bag, it will go back in the Dansco as if it never took the tip to California in the first place. I will post the grades, as soon as I get them.

    I know I know...and like I have said a million times, I wish you wouldn't crack that 05-O.

A dealer friend who sells Barbers - was telling me he had 120 Halves come into his store
and he sent them off to PCGS ... one came back ... 1905-O in XF 40. He disn't realize its
rarity and just sold it on eBay within 20 minutes of listing it as a BIN at $475. I think he got ill
when I told him the coin should easily reach $1250 in 40.

The 05-O I own has yet to be cracked out ... one of these days...

Grades are in! I'm a little bummed about the 03-S. When it arrives I will have to inspect it a little closer. I might have not seen something they saw. Overall I am pretty happy with the grades.

You should be quite pleased with those results.
    1 BB/Genny out of 8 isn't terrible.
Plus, no coins went below your estimated grades!

It seems that you have a conservative eye which is a good place to be. Well done!

On the 1903-S ... don't feel too bad, sometimes tooling is tough to spot.

I think your eye was pretty darn good! You called a few of them right on, and called 'em about as close as you can on the others....though, I wonder what went on with the '03-S? If your eyes were that good, as to call the grades you got, I'd be a bit surprised that you wouldn't see the damage or tooling.

Overall, you did pretty darn good, and your grading is right up there!!! Congrats for both...the grades, AND for having a good eye!
    I'll come up with something.

actually , your results were quite good, tells me you have a decent eye at least with barbers, and with a little more experience you be better than about 80% of the collecting public. If anything , your eye tends to be a bit on the conservative side which is actually a good thing as it will usually lead to better than expected results and less chance of getting buried in borderline coins.

Thanks for all the comments. I really can't take all the credit for grading these coins raw. The forum member I bought some of them from really has an eye for these as well and really knows what I am looking for in these coins. A big kudos goes to Walkerguy21D (Greg).

You did great in a couple of ways; congrats!
Buying from Greg was one of them.
    When in doubt, don't.

good eye grading, Barbers are a great collector coin and pretty easy to grade.

Check the rim of the '03-S, I had a couple of modern(ish) rainbow toners come back ungraded due to tooling and on further inspection I found they had deep cuts in the rim which barely showed when viewing the coin straight-on.

Impressive! Ownership usually adds a grade or two but you kept it honest. Conservative, even. Congrats, Justin.

Thanks, Sean, that's one of the places I need to teach myself to look more often. I always forget coins have a third side.

Lance, I was trying to be realistic with the grades. I had nightmares they would all come back in BBs! I'm not sure why I was so off on the 10-S either. That one will also get a closer look when I get it back.

Nice results but your sellers coins just got more expensive for future purchases.

Im curious about your coin that detailed to poor. You had it as high as 25. Thats a large drop, what got it the poor details? Was the tooling that good?

They say ownership adds a point -- but apparently not for you. image Looks like you did as good as or better than your predictions on all but one of your coins.

Well done & congrats on the grades....Mike

It is not a poor details coin with tooling to make it look like a VF coin. I am not sure why they describe it that way. I am anxious to see what the holder says.

Greg, when I get it back from PCGS, I'll crack it and give it a good looking over. Then just put it back in the Dansco. image
