The 25th Anniversary ASE Set Thread - Part II
Hi All-
Like many, I mourn the original thread.
That said, dare I be so bold as to start a new 25th anniv. ASE thread being that the original is no longer with us.
It is my hope that this message can start another thread where we call all share information regarding this important issue.
Of course, if history is to be our guide, please keep this one squeaky clean.
Let us not forget our generous host who provides this excellent forum for all of us at their expense. Please keep any objectionable posts about our host or anyone or anything else to yourself.
Best, R-

You still have time to crack out the two keys and resubmit while retaining the FS designation. Even if only 1 of the 6 keys comes back a FS70 it would still be worth it IMO. Regardless you did quite well with 3 sets IMO so congrats
Anything...anything?
Or is the Fat Lady finally warming up on the sidelines?
My order was 38391XXX at 6:10 PM Eastern. From what I have read, someone reported 6:03 PM (guess it was eastern) order filled and 6:17 PM order CANCELED. From reading many of the posts in the deleted thread, it seemed that order number was not necessarily the only determininant on order fulfilment ..... seemed some were filled with order numbers after others who were canceled, so who knows what's going on.
I did get some opened and unopened sets though....wondering if I should submit the key dates from opened sets and maybe just submit the unopened for certification, maybe I will luck out and get a complete set of 70's.
I love old coins and am undecided on modern issues. I am also a Stacker and if I can kick it with my foot, I like it even more.

The hype that accompanies these issues generally exceeds the reality, once the coins have been on the ground for a while. In other words, it's a long run for a short slide.
As a new customer I had to get sent a snail mail letter to verify my address, then wait 2 weeks (thanks to weekends and holidays) for them to finally remove the hold on my order.
On the plus side, I've had plenty of time to debate the options of how to sell them. Due to the costs of grading (and shipping from/back to Canada) I think I might just open my box and send in the MS69/70 looking key coins.

Looks like I struck out on the 2011-S, but did pretty darn well on the Reverse Proof. Also, my coin numbers are different because it looks like I'm the only one that didn't pay the extra $450 to get a pretty little flag on my holders. In fact, that is what probably delayed my order a couple of days because PCGS called me after receiving my order to confirm I really didn't want the FS labels. The order was likely on hold for a day or two... I'm still happy with that decision, but I now see it's going to be nearly impossible to find a trading partner to get matching sets!

+++ If it were the (S) or (P), we would say do not sell. Only 100,709 here. Even so with the reverse proof, graded at 68, not knowing if anymore shall be stamped, we would not fold, in order to sell at a lower price. These will be in demand. However, if you require the cash, sell; just don't be foolish. Remember, when you sell, let's say at a most reasonable price, the buyer will in all instances retail that item at a larger price. Maybe not all, but the great majority will. The vultures are non-stop.

Well, you two+ can find another photo hosting site, or pay for your own website. If you two+ want or desire someone to host your images for you I suggest asking nicely, in the first person. If you are looking for a way to upload them onto the website here, that is not an option, as their intent here was to build a website for discussion, and not an image hosting warehouse.
<< <i>We have no intentions of uploading any photos to "photobucket". Any other way of uploading? >>
You will need a photo hosting website to "park" the picture. Photos are uploaded to a site and then linked from the forum. Photobucket is as good as any I have used and it's free. what are your concerns with photobucket?
You can use the image icon in the forum message text toolbar but you will need to insert a URL to the picture. This is basically what you are doing with a photo hosting site.

I'm a long time lurker and newcomer to the board here. In fact, this is my first post!
What's inspired me now is this whole 25 Anniversary Set issue and what to do.... so many opinions....
For the most part, I collect older coins though I do collect new material if I find it beautiful in design/art.
This set fell into the later category of course and I was lucky enough to have gotten through with an order of five sets after four and a half hours of
struggling.
For the most part, I'm a longer term collector/investor, though I must admit that the temptation to 'flip' some of these has been a temptation.
My question is this: My box is still sealed and unfortunately might be a "rattler". It sounds like there might be one loose one in there when I rock the box.
Now, all the talk about white spots has got me a bit worried. I had been planning on holding these long term but this variable has got me second thinking that plan.
If you folks were holding a sealed rattler, what would you do with it now?
Should I submit it for grading?
Sit on it as is?
Or, open it an enjoy it for what it is... and maybe sell a couple of sets, keeping the nicest of the bunch.
Thank you for your input

+++ We have heard of some rumors as to "milk spots", which you allegedly refer to as 'white spots'. We have not seen any of these issues with our sets. There have been many, many trivial complaints about one of the coins not being seated, or "inserted" properly in the five coin set. This is somewhat trivial in nature, for really no damage has occurred, especially when their in sealed capsules. If you decide to submit for grading, we believe that December 4, 2011 is the last day that PCGS will grade such a set. We know, nor understand the reason for this. Your choice whether to sell, or 'sit' on them, as you say. No offense, we grade not our coins, for we know what we have. If we easily have a 70 grade on our coins, which in fact we do, we have no intention to send them in for grading. If we did, we cannot argue with the "experts". We may receive 68, 69, 70 back graded to their definitions of the scale, and standards. When we identify coins under 5x we see their characteristics. No one, but no one can change those facts, although some may. In this respect, we grade not. If you are a "collector" (long term), hold on to them in package, whether opened or sealed. Surely, we inspected our merchandise. We cannot reason that anyone would purchase such without viewing the beauty of the coins. Unless one decides to be in mind content (brainwashed) with the grading services stipulations, then by all means "follow" the leader. We follow no one but One. If you like to make a profit, sell a couple. We would advise not to sell any. We shall not give our reason or opinion as to this, for some things remain best sealed than given away to all; if you can comprehend the meaning thereof. We're glad to see you purchased a few (5) is it?, you can't go wrong, no matter how you look at it.

Their "One" is obviously NOT omniscient!
Synoptic, your use of the first person plural reminds me of our dear departed member Speety, who also wrote his posts in the first person plural (we got a new coin)

<< <i>First strike or not, what are we to do with the 68's? Seriously. I have a RP68 - what do I ask for it? Do I list it singly on eBay? Crack and list it on eBay? Sell cheap and take a hit? I'm looking for opinions here. >>
A while back, I was able to sell a 68 2006-P Reverse Proof for *slightly under* the going price for a 69. Likewise, for the 2011-P I would suggest taking a small hit but not a big one.
Here's one that sold for $432.

Hence 2+. It was not a guess as to how many are in your "we" group, just a way to reference multiples without knowing the exact number.
Rim to left
Rim inside mint cutout.
My only reason for grading these would be to better benefit my family when they go to sell these (after I'M departed ;-) )
My experience in selling coins, before I knew better, has left me a bit jaded, and I'd hate to see the same thing happen to my family.
When there are huge jumps between grades, it only makes sense to have items that might benefit from this 'third party justification'.
Where the 'milk spots' come in.....
They evidently take some time to show up and are a product of storage.
If I have them graded now.... and they grade high....
Am I correct that they are more likely to hold their value 'down the road' then those with 'milk spots' that aren't graded?
To be honest with you, I'm new to the whole grading process. I've purchased some graded coins but have never submitted anything to be graded.
I'm going to be ramping that up though, in preparation for the eventual liquidation of my collection, though hopefully that won't be for a LONG time!
Thank you again all.... for your collective knowledge, experience and willingness to share.

<< <i> Interesting to me that coins popping out in shipment may not have necessarily been a mint packaging problem, but a mint packing problem. BTW, all 5 coins of mine are meant to sit eagle side up. >>
i put this in the previous thread...
the mint packaged them into the box upside down, the 'A25' label is on the bottom on the set
the shipper(s) did nothing unusual, they throw the boxes around like always.
all the jostling during flight/transport and the coins are easily dislodged from the holes, whether they were pressed in firmly initially or not.
i tested a couple, some were better than others...
all 5 of my sets had at least 2 capsules loose IN the display case, a couple were scratched.
all 25 coins were obverse to the viewer in the display.

I know PCGS guarantees their grades, and compensates a collector in the future if problems arise as you're describing. You might go to this site's host site or call one of their CSRs for dtails.

Thanks fivendime. I figured it may have been detailed, but well, no more thread. Interesting that they would put the coins into the plastic capsules "upside down" so that the way they theoretically should have been shipped was eagle side up to the viewer.
<< <i>Just something I picked up on while checking out my opened set. This may have been covered elsewhere, but here goes. The capsule that the coins are stored in has a small ridge running the circumference of the capsule on one side. This ridge is smaller in diameter then the capsule itself. It is meant to sit inside a small ridge inside the mint packaging and keep the coin firmly in place. If the coin is placed in "upside down" it has a tendency to fall out fairly easy in transport. If put in correctly, the coin sits in it's spot and it takes a pretty firm push to push it out. Interesting to me that coins popping out in shipment may not have necessarily been a mint packaging problem, but a mint packing problem. BTW, all 5 coins of mine are meant to sit eagle side up. >>
Raised portion of capsule is normally for the obverse side of the coin, especially American eagles. These capsules are standard but unique to the mint. US mint coins normally go in display boxes obverse (raised portion of capsule) facing the viewer so that the date on the coin is displayed. I am guessing the display box's through-hole in this case is to just facilitate pushing the capsule out of the holder from behind. Try putting the capsules in the holder raised-face up and you should still get a snug fit. I think it is coincidence that the capsule will fit in tightly upside down.
It is also possible that the mint intended to ship capsules mounted upside down in the case for temporary security with intention of owner flipping them after receipt to display the obverse as intended. This could be verified by anyone who opened sealed sets and saw placement of capsules before shipment. I have not opened mint boxes, might went strait to grading.
