I have a hard time just believing that one graded 63.

It must be a pop 1 coin!

I agree. Maybe it was submitted in a sealed box, but my opinion is the mint has a long way to go to catch up in terms of quality with other world mints like Perth or RCM.

Could there be a typo involved here? What does the coin look like? Can we get some good pics? Many of these coins have heavy die polish lines and hopefully the graders didn't mistake them for hairline scratches. I can't imagine any of these coins grading lower than MS67 unless they were mishandled somewhere along the line.

Sounds like something rattled loose in a sealed box and picked up a couple hits. I wonder if it will be cracked out and "pocket-pieced" down to VF-XF.

I'd bet my collection that no freshly minted coin, similarly presented and protected, would grade 63...

My guess is that it was removed from its capsule, and handled somehow, perhaps without gloves, perhaps dropped on the table or floor in the process...

It almost certainly wasn't bag-marked, circulated, stacked, or used as toll money...

Sure would like to know the story behind it, though...

Maybe they used it as a pocket piece for a week.

Okay, all of you guys get the ADHD Award for the day! The point of the post is the VALUE, not the condition of the coin! I know, I know--everyone here is so used to hijacking threads that this is a small matter. Still, thought I'd just point it out image

Now, to the point: this is very interesting. It indicates (with a grain of salt) that demand for this coin is quite remarkable--way above the normal gold eagle collector base. Honestly, I never expected that, but I'm delighted. Shows there are a lot of people out there interested in the history and artistic merit of our coinage. image

BTW (and sort of off topic myself), just saw the original in the Smithsonian History Museum last week. Their new coin exhibit is small, but loaded. Don't miss it!

Not so much a couple of hits, as even that would only knock it down a couple of grades. (Look at most MS65 Morgans...).

I'd go with hairlines. Somehow, someway. That coin has hairlines.

Wish I knew the stroy. It was just one of those dumb luck finds.
I was checking the "Shared Orders" page yesterday, and it was the second submission from the top.
When I opened it, my jaw dropped.
An MS63 UHR???????? And still very valuable to boot!!!

That may just be a lot of wishful thinking on the part of the PCGS guide.

I understand the fact that this coin has a unique grading, but to have PCGS put a value on it seems unrealistic (as do many of their other coin values). The only demand for this coin would be for this grading, a better piece can be had for less $.

I would love to have that 63 Bully or a 62 or a 58. Whatever. A little wear can't take that natural beauty away!

I would be happy to be the first to use one as a pocket coin if someone want's to experiment and donate a specimen......
