<< <i>Dave, no offense, but you've been here like a month and now you've appointed yourself the group rip ethics president/moderator?
We've done dozens and dozens of successful group rips over the years. Can they improve? Sure, but they are what they are.
You can set all the rules you want, but if I see something I want, and I take the initiative to contact Steve and organize a group rip, I will do it when time allows me. << <i>The people that don't think there should be "rules" are mostly the ones who've probably NEVER missed out on a rip. >>
Not true. I've missed out on a number of rips like the '72 OPC rips.
As a matter of fact, I was the first person to mention the mini case in the original thread and I didn't get a box. I'm not crying over spilled milk though.
C'mon guys, we're talking about cards here. Let's not over complicate things and make them harder than they should be. The person who takes the initiative and organizes should call the shots.
I think Don has a great point...while it is good to try and include as many people as possible, unless you check the boards on a regular basis, people are going to miss out sometimes, even with the 24hr rule. And again, to repeat, we have already implemented these standards for most of our recent rips, as when Mike was coordinating them, he'd set a time, almost always around 9 pm, and it was up to you to log on here and participate if you wanted to. That said, I agree that it is up to the person willing to organize the rip as to what the rules are. I think we may be trying to reinvent the wheel here to some extent, when much of what is being discussed has already been implemented.

I have been doing group rips here for the last two years. We have never (that I can remember) had an issue with group rips. We instituted the 2 pack limit for the first 24 hours to make sure everyone could get in. Then raised it up after the first 24 hours.
Now, we have had issues with two of the rips; the first being the 75 topps rack rip that I initiated. I admit that I should have had Steve hold the box and then do the posting the next day. I think we have a solution to that problem. The second being this group rip.
Now, there was a ton of posting of how to do this rip. At one time, we were going to do a group rip and sell by the box. Sometime into it, Steve said he made a deal to sell half the case. It probably wouldn't have been long before the rest of the boxes were gone. A decison was made and the boxes/packs were sold on the fourm.
Honestly, we are not talking about a case/box of 60's material or even 71 topps. 75 topps minis are not scarce and come up for sale quite often.
Let's stop the bickering about who got what and who is being greedy. We already have the rules set (see miconlegacy's group rips) and everyone seems to be happy with. The two instances we have been discussing have been exceptions to the rule.
Now, after my rambling, move on and get excited about the next group rip. Steve has some great products availble and we should be able to do a giant group rip before the end of the year. I see he has a case of 82 and 83 topps cellos.........or maybe some of the mid 70's football and basketball.

We seriously need to cut this BS out... don't make these rips suck by fighting about them. Not everyone can get in them, and that's just life. Whether it's timing, money, or whatever, just deal with it and move on. Rules have always been set by the person who has the balls enough to start a rip, and I think it should stay that way. Let's not reinvent the wheel here. The current system works... don't soil one of the last great things on these boards.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
To sum up, 9:30 est is a nice guideline. However, in the end it is up to the organizer to lay out the rules. People will be left out, but that will be the case regardless. Not everyone will be happy since there are so many that love cards on this board. Check the board often and if you get left out too much organize one yourself. You may end up appreciating what the organizer does a little more.

Both Tim and Mark make great points. Mike did a great job running these BBCE box breaks over the past year and we made tweaks here and there as necessary, but for the most part everyone was satisfied with the results. Only the past two and particularly this last case break had more people dissatisfied, but that will always happen when there is very limited product being considered and the concern that someone will buy it before we can contact Steve.
Heck, I think I might even consider running one of these box breaks using Mike's rules. Back to the sidelines for me.

I would be in for a box of 1983. (or more)
As far as rules for these breaks go I think there is only 2.
1. Make sure Steve (BBCE) is happy, without him we don't have these rips. If he is not happy with these rips we are done. He gives us a discount and does more work. It is easier to sell 1 box on his site than fill (18) 2 pack orders from us.
2. It should be up to the one doing the rip to set the rules.
There are a lot of good people on this forum who help one another and I am sure they consider others when doing these rips, but their schedule would determine the start and duration of a rip. Mike did a great job on his rips but sometimes the 24 or 48 hour time seem to be too long. sometimes a box needs to be cut and the one doing the rip needs the freedom to do what he thinks is best.
I don't want to see #1 or #2 discourage in the least and if I miss out on something it is ok with me.
I too think 9-10 PM EST is a good time and any advance notice is good.

I think that's a fairly cynical read of the situation and the OP. I give Dave credit for trying to bring a little more organization to the chaos that ensues with some of these rips. Ultimately, he's trying to get as many a chance to participate as possible, and I think that's a good thing.
Despite Dave's short time on these boards, he's a nice member to have on here and he brings a lot of positive things to these boards. I don't blame him for trying to improve things here. His heart is in the right place.
