YOU MAKE THE CALL 6! WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!

OK! It's that time again for another grading contest. Same rules as before, you get 1 point for every point you are off on the grade (i.e. if you guess MS-63 and it's MS-65, you get 2 points), and 1/2 point for missing designations (i.e. if you guess DCAM and it's CAM, etc). The person with the LOWEST total score wins, and in the event of a tie, any comments included in the guesses will be considered, or as a last resort, I will rely on a random number generator in Excel. You may only win one of these every 60 days, so if you won one of these in the last 60 days, you cannot win the prize, but you are welcome to guess for fun! The contest will end at 4:00 PM Pacific Time (7:00 PM Eastern Time) tomorrow, August 23, 2002. The PRIZE this time is a lovely uncirculated 1923 Peace Dollar! For this contest, we are going back to the classic designs of the 19th century, each one was graded by PCGS. Here they are:

#1 Obverse
#1 Reverse
#2 Obverse
#2 Reverse
#3 Obverse
#3 Reverse
#4 Obverse
#4 Reverse
#5 Obverse
#5 Reverse

***Please send me a PM with your guesses, or e-mail me at jtryka@hotmail.com, as guesses posted on the open forum may give some an unfair advantage. HAVE FUN!!! Do NOT Post guesses in the open forum!!! ***

A few of you have commented in your guesses on the marks on the obverse of the 1882-S Morgan (#4), and just to be clear, those are on the slab, not the coin.

Well, I won the first JT grading contest I entered and it has been downhill ever since ... why stop my slide into grading oblivion when there is much, much further to go? PM on the way. Personally, JT, I think fellow IU alums deserving of at least a 1-point deduction from their scores! image

JT--PM sent. I didn't read the replies before I PM'ed you. I see that the scratches are on the holder and not the coin as you posted. However, with that said, I would like to leave the grade the same as what I pm'ed you. Thanks!!!!!

Ok, here are the actual grades assigned by PCGS (any complaints, talk to them!):

    #1 MS-63
    #2 MS-63
    #3 MS-64
    #4 MS-65
    #5 MS-60

And the winner is: boiler78 with a score of 1!!! He quessed all the first four correctly, but missed the double eagle by one point with a guess of MS-61. PM me with your address and I will send off the 1923 Peace Dollar. For the ranges of guesses, they are as follows:

    #1 AU-53 to MS-65
    #2 MS-62 to MS-66
    #3 AU-55 to MS-67
    #4 MS-63 to MS-67
    #5 EF-40 to MS-63

I hope you all had fun, and a big thank you to everyone that participated!

jtryka: That quarter is a real gem at MS-64!!!!! The dime too!!

Are all of the PCGS slabs of the same vintage?

I am curious which PCGS slabs they are.

    Hmm...on #2 to #4, I was over by a grade each........

That Liberty II was real tough to grade too! The luster is great behind all that chatter.

Well, considering my shot-in-the dark approach to grading business strikes, combined with my complete ignorance of the coins presented, I'm not feeling too bad with my guesses:

    #1 - MS63
    #2 - MS66
    #3 - MS63
    #4 - MS64
    #5 - AU53

oreville, I believe they are all the same vintage slabs, with the exception of the 1882-S Morgan which is in a first generation PCGS holder. The gold always seems to trip people up, but I'll admit this one is a lot harder, as most of the services seem to cut a whole lot more slack for the Type 2s than the Type 3s. Personally, I would probably have graded this one a strong AU-58, and maybe MS-60 if I was in a really good mood. It is very baggy, but shows very little actual wear.

jtryka: That explains it. At least on the silver dollar that coin looks undergraded by 1 grade by todays standards. I still say MS-66 (I believe I said PL too perhaps a bit too enthusiastic).

What generation are the other PCGS holders?

Yes, I believe I commented also about the gold coin possibly going AU-58 as well. But that luster was wonderful without appearance of wear and it seemed to override the digs and chatter.

    oreville,

all the coins are in the safe deposit box now, but as I recall, they were mostly the later ones with the bluish insert, though I think one was in an older green insert, but don't ask me which one. I suppose I'll have to start taking photos of the whole slab from now on! Though that may increase the opportunity for cheating if you figure out my file naming conventions!

I guessed MS65 PL on the Dollar.
I also guessed PR63 on the V-nickle since jtryka usually mixes a proof in the group to mess with us image

    My guesses were

    63 correct
62 low, but I thought it was a little baggy
63 , 64?? no way, I have a 1891 in 64 and its barely got a nick on it, but then again mine is an NGC
    65 correct
    61 high, I guess I've seen worse uncs so I didn't go 60

3 points for me, not bad

    Coyn

Coyne, although my photo may not do it justice, that quarter is a very nice piece despite the minor nick on the arm. As to whether it's a 64, well I am no expert on the series, but I think it's comparable to yours, though I haven't seen the reverse on yours.
