After 6 years of patiently looking at every 1836 coin on eBay, I finally got the final piece to my 1836 variety set.

My guess is that the BIN was around $125.

The variety is B-5. I am not sure about the die state, but I have seen pictures of more advanced die breaks on the Obv.
It is a marriage of Obv 4 (also: 1836 B-1) and Rev M (also: 1835 B-8, 1836 B-1, 1837 B-1,B-3 and B-4)

Congratulations on picking up the B5 - and in the new reference book I picked up
at the Chicago ANA last month, [ Early Quarter Dollars of The United States Mint
1796 - 1838 by Rea, Peterson, Karoleff and Kovach ] - this coin is rated an R 6+.
Based on their findings, it seems the finest known is EF 40.

Overton varieties refer to early half dollars. There are two pricing guides that are most commonly used for Overton varieties:
1. "Auction and Mail Bid Prices Realized for Bust Half Dollars" by Steve Herrman (print)
2. www.busthalfprices.com by Dave Rutherford (online)
Both work well.

I had a similar experience with an early half dime variety, the 1803 small date. I bought this coin years ago when I saw it listed in a "Coin World" ad. It was not until a few years later that I realized how rare this variety is. After communicating with a couple of other specialist collectors I found out its rarity is comparable to that of your 1836, somewhere around 20 pieces.
The trouble is the Red Book listings leads collectors to the wrong conclusion. Just because a coin is listed with a price on it that almost the same as the more common large date variety (ies, there are actually two minor varieties of the large date), that does not mean that the coin is actually available in most any grade.
She’s beat up, and might not slab again if I cracked her out, but from I’ve seen available, this is probably as good as I will every find.
Now we need only wait for the posting of the inevitable reply that strongly suggests that you have a moral or other obligation to make things right with the seller by sending him more money, etc. etc., simply because it is "not fair" that you get a windfall and the seller gets less than what the coin is worth
