Question about 1796 large cents
Can they have attributes of two varieties? I think I have one that is part s-83 and s-84; is that possible? There is a connection between the pole and bust, but the 6 is low. Pole is longer than the bust. Thoughts?

.
there are numerous die marriages among many series that are virtually identical
there can be an obv die used with many rev dies and a rev die used with many obv dies
some obv dies can be used sporadically over several years
some rev dies can be used sporadically over several years
this is where marriage mapping comes into play in order to figure out if one die was used at different times
sometimes an obv/rev die would even be used into a different design for the series, ie small eagle, large eagle, large letter, small letter but the date would be different
mostly for very early issues though
if you are good with transparencies and/or image transparency then you can do a lot of overlay type work to see the diff
there are also numismatic books out there to greatly assist with this
sheldon, breen, etc etc
<< <i>I don't think you get what I mean. In Penny Whimsy, there are distinguishing criteria for the s-83 and s-84 obverse. My coin seems to have attributes of both. Is that possible? >>
Make sure you look at all the varieties of liberty cap large cents. I think they continue to S-91 or so. There may be another variety which has the attributes you are referring to. However, if none match, and is authenticated, then it would be a new variety. --Jerry
How worn is the piece that you have? Quite often wear or physical or environmental damage can cause a coin to take on characteristics that were not of mint origin. You need a picture here before we can try to provide answers.
Here is the S-83 from Coinfacts. Note how the 6 nearly touches the bust.
Here is the S-84 from Coinfacts. The 6 is even with the other numerals.
The same obv 4 die is used on three other varieties including S-87. It now
has a die crack from the 7 in the date, across the bust to the pole, but higher
than the S-83, where the crack is from the bust tip to the end of the pole.
The reverse of the S-83 & S-84 has the leaf nearly touch the F in OF, where the S-87
is far from the F . You may have an S-87 variety.
