Do Auctioneers Really Make a Difference?

Tell the truth - do you really bid more if the auctioneer is funny, or entertaining, or cute? Or all of the above, like that Brad Karoleff - he is such a DREAMBOAT

I go into auctions with hard limits in mind & don't change up mid-stream.

If you are comfortable and happy, then you are likely to stretch a little.

IMHO, the auctioneer can definitely make a difference.

It makes zero difference to me.... although, some of the mindless masses that attend auctions are likely to be swayed. I have been present at auctions where items sold for more than they could be purchased retail two blocks away. Unbelievable. At the same auctions, I was able to pick up very worthwhile items for below cost - because the dingbats did not understand real value. Cheers, RickO

Absolutely. If you have an auctioneer who is easy to understand, who looks at you when your kind of coins are being sold, and has a good pace but isn't hurrying through everything, then you will get all of your bids in. If the auctioneer doesn't do this, you might not get to make your bid. That's a big difference.

they make a difference when they tell the floor bidders that the winning book/internet bid is maxed out and just one cut bid will win the lot, that usually motivates some to make that last cut bid to win. completely unfair to the non-floor bidder, but it happens often.

The Master of the Potted Plant can make a really big difference. That potted plant in the back of the room, with the right auctioneer, can take everyone up one increment above their max.

Auctioneers get to set the pace of an auction. Part of the job,

of a really good auctioneer ,is to set the emotional tone and attempt

to build and time it properly to peak at the right points, (expensive coins).

People may claim auctioneers make no difference to them but the truth is a good auctioneer can generate better prices. Humor is one element of the package but so are fluidity, efficiency, speed and clarity.

With a good auctioneer people feel more comfortable and confident and those attributes generally make people more likely to bid higher and more aggressively. Also some auctioneers will jump higher increments and that will generate higher prices than increases by lower increments.

yes. esp if they are lying. in other areas i work in the top folks, i mean THE TOP, are bloody liars and provenance manufacturers/retro-engineers.

a nice blend of arrogance and a willingness to sue anyone who rocks their little boat.

judging the replies to this thread thus far by those members who are well respected and most experienced i'd have to say that an auctioneer can apparently make a difference. the opinion of those attending major auctions weekly for many years is probably more valid than that of casual attendance at a few a year.

Very interesting topic. I never gave it much thought but apparently the auctioneer makes a difference. If the bidder can set a price and has the discipline to not exceed his price, it makes no difference to that bidder except he may not win nearly as many coins if the auctioneer can whip the crowd into a frenzy and they start making crazy high bids.

Since as auctioneers, we represent the sellers, a poor auctioneer is better for the buyers.

They certainly do in my opinion. I've been attending all sorts of auctions since I was a kid and there is no question in my mind that a good auctioneer increases the results while a bad one can hurt them. This might not be the case on a single piece, or an ultra rarity, but when looking at the overall results of an auction I believe it is.
