Wow, what a great collection of classic proof coins.

I wonder how many forumites bought coins from that auction. The Time Capsule Collection sale was on August 22, 2011, sold by Centennial Auctions in Nashua, New Hampshire. Some coins were displayed at the June 2011 Baltimore show to generate buzz.

Most of todays auctions are white washed internet sales with no real with no romance. This collection and sale sounds so refreshing. A good win for the little guy!

Great read, thanks for posting it. Here is a question though: Do you think the coins would have fetched better prices had a different auction house handled the collection? I also wonder how the prices would have been affected had PCGS graded the coins. Opinions?

Nice read! Did NGC put something on the slab labesl indicating where they were from? That would be nice. Also the article left out the price realized on the Buffalo nickel.

    Great article.

What great fun it would be to have been the person who opened the original envelopes and took out the individual coins so that they could be seen for the first time, ever, since they left the mint.

How many of you would have the iron will to never, ever, during your life [with the same instructions to your children] open the OGP containing coins you obtained from the mint???? I know that I could not [I mean why buy coins at all if you never look at them].

An amazing story. I wonder how many more of those stories will surface. I recall that Stack's sold a collection recently in their 75th Anniversary Sale with a number of proof sets that included 1837, and 1856 thru 1915. The W.L. Carson Collection. The 1895 Proof Morgan was graded by PCGS PF62. Only a few years included gold.

    Nice story.

Purely speculation on my part, but I suspect that the prices realized would have been greater if the coins had been encapsulated by PCGS, and the auction has been conducted by a high profile auction house (i.e.--Stack's/Bowers, Heritage, Goldgergs).

Here's a possible link of the coins. I just found it and haven't done much exploring yet.
