I just received my "P" 9/11 Medal...

Not bad if it were not for the strange wording and lack of obvious recognition. I like the reverse better than I thought sans the Hope and Honor part. Still confusing. But anyway, I still have smoe questions. Has there ever been a US medal that depicted a mint mark? And in one ounce silver?

The Benjamin Franklin Firefighter medal has a P mintmark and it is one ounce silver.

The silver medal that came in the 1993 Philadelphia Set has a P mintmark too.

I got mine yesterday, and against the grain of what has been said about it - I like it. It is stark and somewhat ambiguous - and can be compared to the Viet-Nam wall in Washington DC. I remember when the wall was built a lot of people were upset by it's perceived lack of symbolism. In retrospect Maya Lin designed something very thought provocative - and now highly regarded for it's symbolism. I cannot say that people will definitely feel this way about the 9-11 medal in 30 years, but it is hard to predict the future.

A wall, which is a public monument, is a lot different from the a medal. The wall was impressive because people could look up the names of their relatives or people they knew. There was a guy who graduated from my high school a year ahead of me, and it was moving to find his name, even though I did not know him well.

The medal is small impersonal piece that rarely takes off as a collectable.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
