anyone still searching for 2009 Lincoln lp2 ddr's?

I may be the last of the breed, but it's a cheap enough thrill to find the right dates and times that I know will yield some of the best of the errors that are going to be acknowledged in future respected numismatic publications. Just picked up five boxes that will contain what I consider the holy grail error (wddr-006 skeleton finger). Anyone else out there still casting their lines out to catch a few winners?

if you have fun hunting for them and that's how you extract joy from the hobby then very cool but I really hope you haven't convinced your self these will ever be worth very much. While no one can predict the future these weren't even hot when they were first found. The main reason they are being put into the cherry pickers guide is only because they are easy to find and they like to include Cherry Pickers specials and have 2 categories, PC (pocket change) and YN ( Young Numismatist) and I would bet my house the pennies will garner those two identifiers when listed. I think the label "PC" sums up most collectors opinion of these.

Yeah, I realize they aren't the most exciting double dies to most collectors, but I enjoy searching for them still. As to future value, who knows. The skeleton wddr-oo6 is one that you can find in only one dated box, within about a four hour time frame, and you don't see them come up for sale very often....living on a tight budget, these are cheap thrills for me and keeps me in the "collecting" world.

I don't know what "collectors" consider to be a worthwhile investment. Something no one, or very few have, I suppose.

I guess no one really watches sales of these on Ebay.

I've watched/tracked/calculated a few dealers of these and their sales.

I personally know 2-3 that have made THOUSANDS of dollars on these. It's easy math, $5 x 200=$1000.

So, to all the savvy collectors that base the value on a single coin; you're correct these won't be worth their time.

Still have 8 unopened boxes from the mint. Can't remember the dates and time printed on them though. Too lazy to go look. image

I lose money on everything I sell and make up for it in volume.

Papi I agree that there's money in volume sales. The only reason I haven't bulk sold mine on Ebay yet is that I believe the values will be going up once they hit the redbook and the cherry picker's guide. No hurry to sell, so I might as well wait and see if my theory holds water or not. I have watched sales of these on Ebay myself, especially one dealer who is very active with these, with great interest. He (or she) had many listed that were Anacs graded. I never submitted any to Anacs, hoping against hope that our host here would come around and recognize these (at least the best of these...a top 10) . Well, I am waiting, but still I am undeterred in my search for more of the prime dates. I did open one of the boxes mentioned above and was fortunate (?) to find three of the skeleton finger wddr-006 wddo-009.....fewer than I hoped for, but, they are one of the rarer errors so they shouldn't be found in mass quantities in every roll. I also had purchased and opened a box that I knew would have the wddr-001's . The count...wddr-001 (11) wddr-002 (7) wddr-003 (3) ... also had several catfish Abes (dieclash obverse under chin) and small die crack at boot/bookmark errors. That was a fun roll to go through. Well guys (and gals) you all enjoy what you love and can afford to collect and I will do the same.... image

Half of those doubled dies aren't even doubled dies. I'm a hardcore cent searcher and I don't even bother checking for them.

I read an interesting article regarding DD type coins and it stated something to the effect after 1995 "the last big DD year" that the minting process was changed so that no major DD could even be produced through a single hubbing method or something to the like. I asked around numerous times "not here" and never got any intelligible feedback regarding the truth of this.

Not recalling exactly it may have said no true DD's obverse/reverse could even be produced due to the change in minting process(es).

I certainly would like to see what all have to say on this subject as it will certainly effect future potential values for any coins minted after 1995 that claim to be DDs.

A comment about if it is worth the time to look for XXX variety. I agree with a previous post, if you enjoy it and don't mint the work and cost, go for it. One of the phrases I've used and hopefully will be quoted for is, "a true hobbyist loses money" meaning the hobby is meant for enjoyment and money is one of the costs of the hobby; time, energy etc are others. For me numismatics is 80/20 business/hobby.

Rest assured that someone else out there in the world is looking for exactly what you are and would enjoy talking about it and a lot can be gained from that, even if the coins don't have much financial value. The camaraderie, enjoyment, education etc probably can't be measured like money can.

Regarding the question about whether these are true double dies or not, I would just say that Wexler, Coneca, Red Book, Cherrypickers Guide, Anacs, and other professional numismatists all agree that these 2009p Lincoln Formative cents have double die varieties. I certainly would not be the authority about double dies, cuds, machine doubling, etc. but I do believe that the industry in general would not have the consensus opinion that these are double dies if they weren't. MercCrazy seems to think they aren't and I would be curious to know what he believes they actually are. LanceNewmanOCC I appreciate your comments in defense of collecting these, even if not the popular series, it was very well put. Type 2 thanks for your comment also. Good to see there is support from other than the usual suspects.... MercCrazy, please elaborate on your position regarding these being true double dies or not. I'm here to learn and not be stubborn in my position. Not arguing, just looking for edification. I'm just curious how you came to that conclusion and what you would classify these "errors" or "varieties" to be.

The doubled dies made with "single squeeze" are different.
Maybe for the most part we won't see something like the 55 DDO or 72 DDO or 83 DDR but there are some interesting ones worth looking for.
Look at some of the 2006 varieties!
