My Nicest Most Expensive NewP Ever
You need not get terribly excited. I am but a small time collector. My goal for 2010 was to buy a proof Walker. 2010 came and went and I still had no proof Walker. Recently, I was perusing the BST and PonyExpress8 (Glenn Holsonbake) had posted a link to his web site saying he had some new material pre ANA. I checked the Website and found a nice proof Walker. I sent Glenn an email saying I was interested and described the proof Walker I was looking for as haze free, spot free, and near cameo. He said that he thought the one I was looking at would fill the bill. I explained that I would need to see the coin before I could commit as proof coins are tough to judge from photos. He was already at ANA by now and agreed to set it aside for me so that I could look at it upon his return from Chicago. We both live in the Sacramento area so the plan was to meet up sometime after his return so I could see the coin. He called me the following Wednesday and said he'd be passing through my area the next day and would be happy to show me the coin. The following day, he brought the coin to my house and it was exactly what I wanted. Now, I had never met Glenn before and he was willing to set the coin aside for me and personally deliver it to my house. That is terrific service which I will not forget.
The coin is a 1938 which is definitely a nicer date than the more common 40's proofs. The fields are nice and watery, and if there were some more frost on the devices, it probably would be a cameo. The coin is in an NGC PF66 holder. I would have preferred PCGS, but I liked this coin. The strike is probably just average, but, to me, it has that wonderful proof look that many Walkers lack. The coin was priced at $875 which I paid. (I did not even attempt to negotiate on the price). So let me know what you think good or bad, I can take it as I will be happy regardless. I have not done my own photos yet. Mine probably won't be any better but will certainly be larger.

I don't know the number, but there is only a few cameo designated examples ever graded with Proof walkers.

Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

As for Glenn, I bought a semi-key merc from him earlier and met him at a show held in the Seattle area. SUPER NICE guy! Totally easy to work with and a pleasure to talk to.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
I doubt it would cameo - not enough frost on the sun, which is often a deciding factor on Walkers - but it no doubt does have some cameo frost, much more than is typically seen on Walkers.
I also like the surfaces... not totally dipped out, but not clouded over either.
I think if you are going to own 1 proof Walker, you picked a GREAT example!

Reminds me of the proof Walker in a '38 set I had to sell to raise funds for a down payment on our retirement home back in '05. I wish I could have kept that set, it had an old cert of authenticity that mentioned it spent a significant amount of time in Australia before coming back to the US.

My digital cameo album 1950-64 Cameos - take a look!
Cameos from 36-42 are exceedingly rare. Very few of any of the denoms have been designated as such. The last I checked no Washington quarter had ever gotten one for example....I can't remember if that was both services or just PCGS. ???

Practice makes perfect & nobody is perfect. So, practice being nobody and be perfect !
That's very nice.
Great find.
I've never owned a proof Walker, and have seen few, personally. That being said, the ones I've seen really didn't look very "proofy", if you know what I mean. I'm just guessing based on the photos at hand, of course, but yours looks to have mirrors deep enough to drown in, eh?
If you cross it to PCGS, I vote you splurge on a TrueView picture while you're at it.
Nice pickup.
Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

I'd love to own a beautiful coin like that.
Beautiful design, proof, silver. What's not to love?

Only 7 of the 36-42 halves have made the cameo designation. The 1938 coins probably have more of the "near miss" than any other year.
Looks like you got one of the nice "near miss" Walkers.

I, someday too, hope to have one as nice as that resting within my collection
I looked at it at Glenn's table [ I was his assistant ]
and thought it very close to a Cameo myself. As nice
a type coin as you'll ever find.

Great looking PR Walker!
I take it you live in Davis. Do you ever come to the Santa Clara coin show in the Bay Area? This November's one will be pretty much a bust as a lot of the better dealers will be in Baltimore instead of Santa Clara, but they all seemed to be lined up for next spring's show (should be in April or maybe early May).
