i've been actively buying coins since about april. yesterday my wife tells me that i need to put the brakes on that. it is not a cash flow issue. i really dont like her idea.
should i adhere to her request?
overtly ignore it?

Ask her why. If she doesn't have a good reason for it then keep buying coins
<< <i>Buy some coins you know you can profit on, than take her out to a nice dinner. Say you paid for it with the profit from coins..... See what she saids than! >>
Can you please give us the formula for "know you will make a profit"? That sounds hard.
....like youre thinking we have that figured out......

heh!
If it is not a cash-flow issue, come to a compromise and then go from there. Afterall, it is both your money.
not yet). Sounds like a learning curve. Perhaps a coin show is in order or a Museum with a
coin display or a trip to the Mint?
My wife and I do coins together. I buy them and she says sell them when she needs money
for a new couch, TV, range or whatever. I abide with no complaining!
PS: might want to tell her that it's a forced savings account that will pay off the house someday!
Good luck.

I've countered with a Dolly Madison proof and BU Commerorative
Dollar Set and some Austrailian Koala Bear's and Chinese Pandas.
FOR HER
Steve
she had no good reason for asking me to stop
showing profit wont work either she doesnt care about that, plus i am not selling atm
i once won four figures in a $50 poker tournament, went out the next day and bought wood floors for our house, spent the next weekend installing them. next time i went to play shes says dont you think you should quit while you re ahead?
bribing her with dinner etc. might be a good solution, maybe she is feeling ignored
sad thing is, she flat refuses to jump into the coin game, she has one of the best grading eyes i have ever seen, probably because of no emotional attachment to a coin
her father was a part time dealer in the 70s and 80s, i bet her stop idea came from her mother...... maybe i should keep them from conspiring against me
The obvious follow-up is Why? did she ask you to stop!!!
I advise AGAINST covert anything in marriage.... that is not what marriage is about.

It takes a lot to get me to laugh out loud ... this response got me.

You could always pose the question "why not?" Unfortunately, the answer you receive may not be (directly) related to your question.
Her response to the poker situation suggests that she sees coin buying as a form of gambling. (possibly a valid assumption)
Without getting too Freudian, did her parents have any sort of understanding concerning her dad's part-time dealing, and how well did he do with it financially?
Frankly, it's none of your mother-in-law's business unless she is somehow supporting you financially. Your wife is telling you something here, but I am not smart enough to tell you exactly what it might be. I guess the first step is to determine whether or not your wife is objecting on a rational basis or on an emotional basis.
Ok, I'm done here.
I knew it would happen.
And funny too , ya want to hang on to her with both hands mate , cheers

At first, my wife was also very apprehensive about my purchases.
But after I told her many many times the reasons I brought the coins, and showed her the actual profits after I sold several coins, her attitudes changed.
Now, even thought she still don't like it, but she allows me to buy as long as I leave enough cash flow for our regular expenses.
PS llafoe's advice only works on 4th or 5th wives, not 1st, so you need to wait.

A relationship is either side by side or should not exist at all. Just my two cents on the subject matter of living happily ever after in a codependent relationship.
She sounds like a smart lady and will soon see that coins ain't that bad.

I too was a dedicated batchelor and determined to stay one , the ol'lady had different ideas on that.
<< <i>Talk to your wife. Figure out a compromise or whatever. Your wife is the only one that needs to help you here. You and she need to come to an agreement and then stick to it. Very easy, yet not what a lot of people do >>
I feel your pain, because in my first marriage, it was a (minor) source of contention. But in that case, it WAS a cashflow issue.
In this, my second marriage, I have learned from the past and one, I picked somebody far more easygoing and compatible, and two, I've demonstrated that my hobby is mostly self-supporting and therefore NOT a cashflow issue- coin money comes from selling coins, and household money comes from my paycheck, which I hand over. I'm seldom asked to put my coin money into the household kitty unless something major is at hand. Ladymarcovan lets me have my hobby, and for that I am grateful. It keeps things harmonious.
If it is not a cashflow issue, as you point out, what are your wife's objections to it? You need to find the that reason and work some kind of a compromise.
Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.
So I pick up a $500 camera and $400 macro lens and a $140 point-and-shoot for her. "You PAID HOW MUCH for THAT?"
Yeah, but I bought you one too!
Cheers!

PS: Making a profit on coins is more difficult than you think, unless you either have a source where you can get first shot on them and / or can sell them to people who know less than you do.

which one are you going to eliminate?
you should conspire with her mother, to determine if she is putting the 'no good reason' ideas in her head.
maybe you can learn the reason(s) and address it???
