I am in the camp that they are stockpiling the dollar coins BECAUSE they plan to eliminate the dollar bill.

Makes sense. If the Government can get you to think of dollar as pocket change, then inflation will be that much easier to swallow.

Eliminating the dollar bill will cause some general malaise and consternation, but no one will lose and election over the issue. Cheers, RickO

MA representatives could because the mill that produces the paper for our currency (and has for some enormous amount of time) is located there. Eliminating the dollar bill would cause them to lose a huge amount of business. No other state rep would have a problem.

Every representative is for cutting costs so long as it isn't in their state.

If Congress is going to eliminate the dollar bill, they should also eliminate the penny. That way, cash register drawers will have room for the dollar coins.

<< <i>let's see killing the dollar would also kill many political figures chances of getting relected, so with that hanging over their heads don't expect the dollar to die anytime soon >>

I seriously doubt this since most Americans would embrace the idea after only a short time and be critical of why it wasn't implemented before now.

I normally would agree with this opinion except that dollar coin production has been going down since early 2010. If this were in fact the plan, I would have expected the surplus to be much higher than it currently is.

That's giving the gubment too much credit IMO. It would mean they're thinking ahead, using reason, and being proactive.

If the push to reduce costs and cut spending continues, then the time for eliminating the paper $ is here and it will happen.

As for the public, their memory is only a few months long for the most part and it will all be forgotten in less then a year.

I doubt there will be any fallout even for MA politicians. The congressman can always vote no on the bill to "protect" their business constituent and it would likely easily pass.

The follow up then would be will the $2 bill see use and replace the slot for the paper ones in the register?

I could almost believe thy'll convert the entire GDP of the country
to the production of rag dollars and zinc cents before they'd get
rid of either. We've already been making them at least three de-
cades beyond the point they became obsolete so why change now?

One sure way to kill any chance of eliminating the dollar bill (which from what I understand is accountable as money owed the Federal Reserve Bank by the US Government) is to include the cent. The general public would NEVER support such an issue since it represents too much of a change. Instead, make the cents from other materials such as a steel core.

These things are long over due.

I don't beleive there are any schemes.... the treasury is following the law.

Congress should act on 3 independent bills:

    1) eliminate the paper $1 FRN
    2) eliminate the 1 cent coin
    3) establish a low minimum threshold for dollar coin production

By keeping these as seaparate actions, you can divide the power of the separate nay sayer groups. If the paper dollar is eliminated, naturally the dollar coin and $2 FRN note production will need to pick up.

This same thing goes for voters and their reps. Voters want congress voted out except for their guy...so we end up with the same schmucks.
