My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.
More evolutionary than revolutionary, but it is definitely welcome. For the lastseven or eight months, I have been able to access most of this information on my mobile phone by going to CoinFacts' main page. But, this looks like it will reduce looking up information from several minutes to several seconds--which is definitely wonderful!

If you don't have a cell phone, you are probably 70+ or mentally at 70+ or have no money. It's not the demographic that a growing company should be going after. The Coinfacts announcement is going after the younger crowd. Exactly what the hobby and the company should be doing. I'll be getting my daughter to try out her iTouch on Coinfacts next week.

While I disagree with the specific age reference, you otherwise make a good point. PCGS is targeting tech savvy people with some disposable income. Some of these will be younger than the average guy at a coin show. It's a good strategy, IMO.

For some PCGS Mobile CoinFacts will never be a big deal. For starters you need to have a phone that can access the internet. Secondly, you need to buy and sell coins. I'd say if you don't spend $1000 per year, there may not be enough incentive to signup.
But - if you're not one of those people, PCGS Mobile CoinFacts could become the essential reference for all your transactions. For starters the video only offers a glimise of what PCGS Mobile CoinFacts can do today. There is so much more for you to discover. If that's not enough we already have a couple significant additional features planned for the near future. I hope you can try it as part of a real transaction during next weeks free trial. You will get a better deal on your coins. That's what it is all about.
If you are not at the ANA it doesn't matter you'll still be able to try PCGS Mobile CoinFacts for free. If you're buying coins at the local B&M, in an auction, through the mail, or at a local coin show every purchase or sale requires an informed decision. No other system comes close to offering the information PCGS Mobile CoinFacts does on a single screen - even the hosted version of PCGS CoinFacts. All the data has been reformatted to fit the mobile device. The data has been reorganized so everything you need for a specific coin is on one screen. And we have designed the system with optimal performance in mind. Most transactions are completed in less than 2 seconds whether 3G, 4G or WiFi. Real time response for real time negotiations.
Take a look at this screen shot for an 1812 Bust Half in MS65. Where else can you see the PCGS Price Guide, PCGS Pop and the last 3 auctions for both PCGS and NGC coins on one screen - in less than 2 seconds! Click on any of the auctions listed and see the actual coin and auction details. Click on the dark blue bar just above the bottom and see pop or prices for all grades (click on a grade and you will get this screen for that grade).
We will be happy to walk you through the system at the ANA, but give it a try - you can't break it or get too lost. It's actually very friendly and intuitive.
Now if only Collectors Universe can create a mobile version of CCE. That would be even more helpful.

That leaves out most of the younger crowd. Frankly, I couldn't get my kids interested in coins even starting them at a very young age. As the grow older (late teens/early twenties) they have a lot of other things that draws their attention that we didn't have when we were their age. Well, except for maybe exhaust fumes and perfume!
Thank you for the update. PCGS has made major improvements in the last two years on the grading front and the tech front. I think I speak for most of us when I say thank you for all of the improvements. Is there any chance that at some point in the near future PCGS may start adding information about world coins in CoinFacts? Thank you.
<< <i>Now if only Collectors Universe can create a mobile version of CCE. That would be even more helpful. >>
That is in interesting observation. I think there are less than 1000 CCE members, though I may be wrong. Do you think if that is true that it is worth their time? Could they make back their investment by growing the users? If this feature adds 10 users but costs $50k, how long would it take them to recoup the investment?
I'm afraid the same holds true when trying to rationalize the costs involved in adding information about world coins in CoinFacts. Although it would be great to have all of this information in one place, I can imagine how much work is involved on the initial setup and subsequent maintenance of this information.
Maybe the opening of the PCGS office in France may help spark interest in other countries for graded material and make it worthwhile for PCGS to add the resources necessary to add this information into the existing products like CoinFacts and the PCGS Price Guide.

In my opinion CCE as it is is a cash cow for its owners. A mobile version of CCE would cost next to nothing to develop and ease of obtaining information would attract more members.
Don't forget that CCE generates a lot more revenue per subscriber than Coinfacts ever will. It costs an absolute minimum of $229/ month per account on CCE (many subscribers pay $379/ month). Coinfacts costs at most $12.95/ month.

Unless it's as good as Plus, I won't be impressed. Might have to sell some of the stock. If it shows the auctions, I know there are some wrong information that PCGS won't correct in the records/POP's. For instance, a 1965 Kennedy half in MS 67. It was sold a few years ago as an MS coin. Yet, even the auction company stated the coin is prooflike, although not designated by PCGS as an SMS coin. I have worked with several people at PCGS and they refused to drop the coin from the MS POP's. EVEN with a copy of the auction's description and photos which provided absoloute proof of PCGS's error. When my 1965 upgraded to MS 67, they kept it as a 66. That plus my 1976 in 67+ took several calls to PCGS, and I don't have access to Coinfacts, so I still don't know if they were corrected. Just a small sample. ((((
You only live life once, enjoy it like it's your last day. It just MIGHT be!
