Let me tell everybody what the announcement is and crush your bubbles! Don is going to reveal who D.B. Cooper really was and where the startup cash for PCGS came from. image

COINFACTS has an inside information on private treaty sales that they can post to prices realized information page?

Oh I have been waiting for this! As a matter of fantastic PR with the collecting community - any coin photographed as an example coin in coin facts will now have either the collection, or owners credit given. Plus PCGS will give a free voucher for each coin they ask to use. Did I guess right ??????

It would seem to me that PCGS might give some consideration for each coin they choose to use on CoinFacts. Such consideration could be a submission voucher based on the value of the coin, or at least a reference to the coin owner. I long wondered why PCGS doesn't at least give the coin owner the TrueView pictures.

They never asked to use my coins. They are just there. And I thought it was cool. But I did pay for trueviews and I guess that gave em the rights. Is that how they're all done on coinfacts? You want a trueview and it goes on Coinfacts?

Whatever it is, it will almost certainly be something to encourage use, membership, submissions, or anything which adds to the bottom line.

More collector friendly-interactive-a means to add info. CoinFacts becomes your Coinfacts! Is my guess.

    Leo

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

    My Jefferson Nickel Collection

  • One thing I've been wanting to see, and mentioned as forthcoming, is a "time machine" feature that shows the change in value of coins over time. The other guys with the white slabs have one that goes back five years, though if I want to go back further, I have to dig out the Redbook I bought in medical school. (It has dent marks for all the thumps it has had against my head when I see how much cheaper coins were back then.)

I'm keeping my ears raised on this one. I've found my subscription so far to be very helpful already. As for a mobile phone version, more and more mobile phones are able to display full-sized web pages, albeit tiny. CoinFacts as-is displays on my Droid X fine, and I reach for it at coin shows while making buying decisions.

Maybe something that ties into databases of existing certifications and cert. verification... something to help aid in authenticating. Or, maybe more diagnostics for each coin to help detect counterfeiting, though that would be almost as labor-intensive as setting up CoinFacts in the first place. (Well, you did promise something big, and at parity with sliced bread.)

Looking forward, and I'm glad I've got that day off.

I like the concept of a Wikipedia-like Coin Facts that lets all of us enter information about coins we know a lot about, subject to editing by experts at PCGS. This would fill out a lot of the portions of Coin Facts that still have room to grow. It would make the site much more robust and interactive.

Mr. Willis and Mr. Hall need to get together to decide whether the announcement is the 5th or the 12th (see HRH video).

On Aug. 5 (this Friday) we will offer a preview. All the details and availability will be on Aug. 12.

I got it. When you put a cert # in you will get all the info like when the coin was graded time date 1 st name of sub. Now that will be cool if it was true and I would do coin facts.image

    Hoard the keys.
  • I reckon anyone can just download a nice truview from the website ; especially if it's THEIR coin !

    and yes, thats great news

......PCGS will now pay the owner of the coin royalties for the rights to the coins image ??

I got 1/2 a dozen they use in their Coin Facts pages ; I can just feel the money in my pockets already image

I suspect there may be links to numismatic literature (on-line books), and possibly more auction archives including eBay and Teletrade. Coin Facts already has a lot of information, but more is better!

Growing up in Missouri, one of the places I lived was Braymer, MO and the closest shopping area was Chillicothe, MO so we would load up the kids and head to Chillicothe every Saturday to buy groceries. My dad uses the sliced bread aphorism quite often so I'll have to ask him if he knows it was invented in Chillicothe (sort of). --Jerry

Only three more days to find out. Can hardly stand the wait.

Reminds me of the Carly Simon song, "Anticipation."
    Dr. Pete
  • Something tells me everyones expectations will be too high now and when it's announced we'll see a bunch of "that's not a big deal!" type posts. At least that's how these things usually work. I'm trying to stop buying coins for a few months so I can sock away the 300 bucks for a platnium membership and get coinfacts. I had the 10 day free trial and found it too be a valuable resource. If I had to guess at the feature it would be historical prices per coin per grade. Like an extension to what they have ATS, but with more data points. That and expanded auction coverage would make coinfacts the holy grail of coin information imo.

So, If someone was meaning to lok into trying out coinfacts would it be better to subscribe before the announcement or to wait to see what the announcement is. If that person waited and then found out that it only bennefitted people who subscribed before th announcement it would have a negative effect on the decision to then subscribe. As in, oh well, too late to get the benefit, not worth it. Visa-versa, if someone subscribed now in anticipation of not getting the benefit if they wait and then the benefit either wasn't all that great or if the new benefit was available to new subscribers after the fact then they would feel they were tricked into subscribing prematurely which would have a negative effect in the long term...

Notice my subtle way of trying to get a clue as to whether it would be better to subscribe before the announcement or if it is ok to wait...
  • dbcoindbcoin Posts: 2,200 ✭✭
Hall said the news is "Free. Won't cost you anything" so I don't think it matters when you subscribe.
  • DonWillisDonWillis Posts: 961 ✭✭✭
Yes, this is something that will be made available at no additional charge to PCGS CoinFacts subscribers..........

  • illini420illini420 Posts: 11,467 ✭✭✭✭✭
Maybe all of the PCGS grading sets have been trueviewed and uploaded to CoinFacts... been waiting for that for a long time. It was cool to see the sets when they were displayed at Long Beach a few years ago. Would have been nice to get a closer look though, especially at some of the problem coins and counterfeits.

  • I've enjoyed CoinFacts quite a bit already myself ... Looking forward to hearing this. image

I stumbled upon you guys taking images of variety coins for coinfacts

I found images for two of my coins and I never knew you took the images! Thanks!

How about a QRcode on the back of the coin with information on the coin. Something that can be scanned with any decent cell phone with an app (iphone is RedLaser) Have that linked to a PCGS database that can be pinged to check to see if the coin is stolen.

I have a QRcode on the back of my business card, you just scan it, it gives you allt he info you need AND it will allow you to hit a button to create a new contact from the info that was just scanned.

Talk about cool! Also, how about a PCGS hotline where people can document stolen coins with a hotline people can call to check.

Anyone with a phone scanner, scan the coin below, it's pretty cool how much information you can put into it. Let me know if you find anything wrong image

  • The QR code is pretty cool, though I think you may have the date wrong, looking at the "U" for diagnostics, unless you have a rare variety...
