When was the message board feature started, and are there any "charter" members still around?

    March 2001!

If I remember right, there was a thread like this earlier in the year where members were figuring out who signed up first to the new boards.

I was on the old boards in 1997. Back then they had auctions, etc. It was primative compared to today, but I enjoyed it. Especially being stationed in Korea and not getting on too often.

It would be fun if somehow someone was able to link some random thread from the original boards. It would be a kick to remember what they looked like.

    Right!

We learn how to whine about eBay listings and fee's!

We learn how to whine about US Mint Products!

We learn how to whine about recent submissions!

We learn how to whine about grade opinions!

Most importantly though (and all kidding aside), we learn that there is much, much more to the Coin Collecting hobby than simply filling holes in a Dansco and shouting "BINGO, I've completed a Set!"

We learn that there are new varieties found everyday.
We learn the historical aspects behind certain "Legendary" coins and how they were made!
We learn about collecters from the past!
We learn that, regardless of what one may think about a coin, somebody else always see's something different !
We learn how to supplement our coin collecting addictions by buying and selling coins!
We learn that what was once important in the past, may not be so important today.

The involvment with numismatics takes on a completely different feel when there are others to share your thoughts and opinions with and this message board makes that possible for folks that are thousands of miles apart and that have a variety if different interests!

I could only wish I'd been a part of the forum back when it initially started as there were some tremendous opportunities made available back then.

For now, despite my thoughts otherwise, I'll continue to hang around and whine about this and that until they throw me kicking and screaming out the door! AND, I;ll probably learn a whole lot more while I'm doing it.

1998 for me, that was when it was an independent site and had the free collector to collector auctions where you could pick up decent stuff once in a while. I think it was 1999 when PGCS bought Collectors Universe and integrated the forum into their site as time went on.

Was here at the begining of the new board in February, 2001. I was a member of the old board for awhile before that. I joined the PCGS collectors club in August, 1997 at the ANA in New York City and since then I'm a PCGS fan. Steveimage

shylock used to do that on occasion, not sure how he did it, perhaps he had some archives of it saved.

It was always interesting to see those old posts.

I posted a little bit on coin message boards in the early '90's but don't recall what they were.

I finally bought my own computer in Sep '01 but somehow didn't find this site until April. I knew
I was home and signed up and posted immediately.

I have been a member since Febuary of 2005. Although I don't seem to take this board seriously at times I really do. It's just my nature to take things lightly. But, I do know when I'm in the presence of genius. The people here know what in the he!! they are talking about and this place is over run with them. Regardless of my actions I do listen to the knowledge that crosses this forum and try to take advantage of it in my collecting . Best free advice you will ever get is here on the CU Coin Forum. I want to thank all you very wise collectors for the wisdom you impart on our hobby every day across this forum. This place is a virtual cornucopia of numismatic knowledge.

As has been mentioned, the folks with joined dates of February '01 generally all came here together in the mass migration from the older boards. I don't know when exactly I was first on the old boards, but it was in the '90s and they still offered on-site coin auctions. The software was quite slow and very few posts were made. The old boards were stripped down with a white background and really no bells and whistles. There were also no avatars for members. The old boards were shut down in late February '01 and we all had to register again on the first version of these boards, though the first version of these boards was a bit different than what we use today and was slower, too. We also had all of our post counts reset to zero and we all had the same join date no matter how long we were on the old boards. Some members changed user names when they registered again. The only avatars offered at the time were a group supplied by the software company that included my green guy, the tree that BigE uses, the people that Conder101 and jamesfm use and a small number of other options.

I joined at the tender age of 20 so that would make it 2003. Grew ALOT in my time here. Learned what will and what wont get tolerated real quick. I remember talking to RYE ( the gold coin guy) kinda ticked him off one time and he put me in my place. Since then Ive learned to mellow out and dont Pee up a flagpole.

Use to celebrate forum's anniversary every Feb. It was a cool place back in the day when
it was a smaller, closer knit group who shared info you couldn't find anywhere else.

You use to be able to access the pre-Feb 2001 "old" forum when it was in its infancy
and I linked that here years ago. But that link has long since been squashed.

The PCGS forum was around a couple years before the "new" forum that officially
started Feb 2001 as many original members joined status states. It was a more
rudimentary forum and was more like "ask David Hall"...he answered most of the
    questions believe it or not.

I tried using the way back machine to find the forums as they were back then.
Here are a couple of links. I am sure the old timers can explain things a bit more
to get an idea of how it was.

    link1

    link2

from these links you can browse through the history of pcgs's webpages and check
out DH when he was a young buck.

I joined in late 1999. The boards were truly informational and I gleaned a lot about the coin industry back then. Now I see a lot of drama. The PCGS forums would now make a good, long lived soap opera series.
