ASE die differences - different years

I was looking at a couple of ASE's. One a 1992 and the other a 2006 and noticed how different the dies
were that struck the coins. I'm almost certain this is nothing new, but interesting to see the differences
between the two. I placed arrows showing the major differences that I noticed. It was hard to get focused
shots with my copy stand packed up. I thought others might think it's kind of neat as well.

Interesting! I've never really compared the different years of ASE's to check for differences. I do know that the flag on the obverse has a lot more detail now than it did when the series started in 1986. I wonder what year the changes were made to the dies and if there are any transitional varieties?

The feathering on the two examples posted have many differences as well.

I had not noticed these differences... kind of took the ASE's for granted that (aside from the reverse switch) they were the same. Will have to look at them again... thanks, Cheers, RickO

Take a look at the surface/finish of the SAE series and notice how that changes over a period of time as well. I noticed it a few years ago.

There have been several hub changes over the years that have been mentioned on here.

Now what you need to find out is if in any years in between 1992 and 2005 there was an instance where both hub styles were in use in one year such as the 2008-W ASE with 2007 reverse.

To the best of my knowledge, that is the only case.

NGC has certified some 1986 ASE's as PL (proof-like) but I've never been able to find one. I'd love to see one if anybody has a pic they can post.

This is really cool Kimber. Thanks for the photos. With great toning and varieties now, ASEs are coming into their own as the modern silver dollar.
