No pros that I know of will be there, no tournament, just a bunch of wealthy guys ( and frankly I do not fit in there either) and although 10k I could handle for the experience, if I lost I would feel it unlike those guys.

When I was in High School, we had a lot of free time. We’d play poker in the cafeteria. Money was exchanged under the table (literally) after each hand. At first it was just a few ordinary coins. Once in a great while a dollar bill came out. After a while, the “fish” ran out of money. The smarter players had taken all their present assets. So “credit” was extended, so as to take their future assets as well. Some players became indebted. “Double or Nothing !” was eventually heard. And then many more times. With this new credit boom, poker wages skyrocketed. Some hands were played for $20 or more in “credit”. Large debts were commonplace. Debts were swapped. If you owed Johnny $40 and Johnny owed Willie $40, and Willie owed you $40, the debts were all cancelled roundabout. But then the inevitable happened. Steven got in a jam, and he needed to collect on a debt to buy something he needed. He needed to collect that day. Billy owed Steven $12, Steven needed $5, and Billy had $6. Billy didn’t want to pay anything. But a deal was struck. Billy paid Steven $6 and the debt was cancelled. 50-cents on the dollar ! Soon word got out that this was the way things were going. Debtors wanted ever more-favorable terms. Things got ugly when Kevin owed Mark $10 and Mark owed Tony $10. Mark wanted a switcheroo to cut himself out and make Kevin owe Tony the $10 directly. But Tony wouldn’t have it since the credit-worthiness of Kevin was lower than that of Mark. So Mark just refused to pay his debts and his perceived credit rating plummeted – below that of Kevin. It was an all-out race to the bottom ! Finally at the end it got to where over $600 in (NET face value !) debts were settled in a multi-way deal with the only actual money or asset changing hands was an old 1878 silver dollar (worth about $3 at the time !). After that fiasco, no more credit was extended. Either you paid up after every hand, or you didn’t play. The regulators (teachers) finally found out about our little financial experiment going on in the cafeteria and shut it down. So we just moved it off campus to a friend’s apartment nearby. I learned more about economics and finance from all this than I did during my entire High School and College education.

My friend and client invited me to a guy's home........there were 80 guys there doing a calcutta for a 3 day golf tournament ...... I am going to walk and follow my friend tomorrow.
He was already there with the others when I got there and he motioned me over and I sat next to him on a low garden wall.
The air was full of cigar smoke, laughter, and yelling as bets were being made on 2 man teams in 6 different flights.
The alchohol flowing a plenty too.........80 guys partying it up and all mutimillionares.
My friend reached over 2 guys next to me and tapped none other than MJ on his shoulder. When MJ spun around my friend gave me a bear hug and introduced me as the guy who has advised him the last 29 years on his wealth .............and also the guy who will be joining them at the poker table tomorrow.
I said "Michael Jordan I am .............. nice to meet you Mike.....! He looked at me and said " I'm going to take your money".....I said "yeah well I have been told I am an underdog" and of course secretly thinking I'd love the poker gods to drop great cards my way tomorrow night.
Then I said "what's you handicap Mr Jordan" ,,,,,,,he looked at me kinda funny and I thought to myself why did I call him Mr Jordan when I just called him Mike moments ago... especially in a setting like this....then I repeated my question and he said "4" and looked away and spoke with other guys.
His hands are huge and his fingers are long......no wonder he can hold the ball in one hand palm down.
My friend told me later I should not start out at the big table as I will either fold when I should stay in or stay in when I should fold.
But if I don't start there I may not get a seat as there will be plenty of other guys who want to play at his table.

Have a blast. The nice thing about poker is that on any given night just about anyone could win. Over time the best players come out ahead but on any one night luck can flat out beat skill. I've received my share of bad beats and it's usually from a weaker player. May the river be your friend and the lobster tails be your guide to the buffet..............Best of luck. MJ

I hope you take this experience to the next level. Buy Doyle,s or Phil,s or Greenspun,s book!
Then keep in mind you are likely to get invited back as they need the money! Set them up and then let us know how it went! It's called sandbagging and the pros all do it. So, listen up my man and start studying. Heck, Scarne on Cards is a book that's out of print but would help you immensely. I learned how to deal from the bottom and out of the middle reading that book. But, never used those talents! Had to learn them to make sure I was not the patsy at the cheating table. My first money game I drew to an inside royal and hit it only to have every one at the table fold! It was the first hand of the night and everyone was skittish!
Well, I could make this a long post but I won't. And yes, you probably will be invited back, and you likely won't catch any cards then either. Winning poker isn't just about catching cards - it's about playing the other players, and sorry to say and it's obvious that you definitely got played.
<<< The host and the fellow who invited me starting betting big on one hand after the flop >>>
I'm not saying they cheated and there are all types of cheating in poker...suffice to say that at a game such as this, signaling and some players working together is the rule not the exception...and I'm not saying for sure that these particular two were playing together, but then again I am saying that it's almost definite that some there were playing together, and believe me, you'll never figure out who it was or how they were doing it.
One other point that tenderfoot poker players don't usually understand...even without any cheating, all things being about equal, the players who have the most money will win the money, and those players I think dwarfed you with the money they have to play poker - frankly, you had no business sitting in on that game, even for more reasons that I'm expressing here.
But it sounds as though you "enjoyed" the experience, perhaps as some blow 10K and go to the WSOP for the experience and a chance to hit the lottery...but those players at the WSOP, have a much better chance of winning than you'll ever have in this situation in which you basically have no chance, even if you "caught cards"...and I'll leave it at that.

-Keith ps Oh, did Mike take your money? Any good stories? >>
Mike took some of my money. These guys are to wealthy and I knew it so betting money is chcken feed to them
meanwhile I am trying to play tight poker. For 4 1/2 hours of playing cards...I maybe was in 9 hands all night. Just was not catching cards.
20 and 40 blinds.
The host and the fellow who invited me starting betting big on one hand after the flop....
He kept betting big.
I had trip nines, so had to stay in and just called.
Ended up the 3rd player ( not MJ) caught a river card for a straight.
I cannot believe he had not folded earlier with the way the host was betting as it was one of the bigger pots of the game all night ( over 20K).
The host had trip 3's. >>
You played it weak and let the draw get there - it was your job to raise the draw out >>
I think the guy who got the straight on the river would not have folded whatever I bet cause the bets were some of the biggest of the night......I lost 7k that hand alone.
I manage money. I earn money. I save money . I give away money. I collect money. I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
<< <i>You win more by raising than by playing hands weak. >>
He had an open ended straight draw, stayed in, and caught his card.
There was no pair on the board. >>
Limit or no limit? If no limit, your fault. If limit, not much you can do other than 3 raise each time. >>
It was no limit but restricted to what each player had in front with buyin of 5k.
I think he figured me for trips....or possibly drawing for straight like himself.
Had the board paired I would have boated. >>
Of course you would have - but by playing your hand weak, you let the draw stay in. You could have priced him out by raising sufficiently...especially on the turn. An all in with one card to go will get out most draws.
Alright, back for one more post - I couldn't stay out. LOL
With all due respect to the OP, it did not matter whether you won that hand or not, you would have sooner or later gone broke anyway. You were up against better players...who had much more money than you...and even though you don't realize it, I guarantee there were forms of cheating going on in a situation like that.
You didn't have a small chance of winning, you had no chance of winning...but if you wanna blow another 10K and then another and another to learn the lesson...oh well, it's your money.

Because it's poker, that's why...you've perhaps played in home poker games with friends for years...however, you were in a different arena there my friend, and they're not looking to take prisoners.
I'm trying to save you from losing another 10K, but just like too many things in life, as they say, no good deed goes unpunished...so laugh if you want to...but it's not me who lost the 10K. Capiche?
I don't know much about poker, but I can spot a hustle a mile away.
I suspect that this is a regularly scheduled game for most of those guys, and every time they invite one or a few "new fish" to the game. They use MJ as a lure.
That way they have a continuous supply of fresh money coming in to have some fun with. I think the "regulars" all consider it part of the fun; I don't think they consider it as vital to their income for the year.
Hey -- you got a chance to meet & hang out with MJ for $10k. That would be worth it on its own to a lot of people.
But I wouldn't double down by going again, unless dropping another $10K is a typical night's entertainment for you. If it is -- enjoy! But don't expect to win, because you won't.
<< <i>Read David Halberstam's book about MJ. He is insanely competitive and not above "fixing" bets before they happen. >>

There was a story where he bet w/his teammates about whose luggage would come out first at the airport.......he had prepaid a baggage handler to make sure he would win.......

Spot on post. The OP is probably thinking, why should a rich group like this hustle me out of a lousy 10K or even possibly some there cheat by signaling and working together to do it as stevek implies. As CoinRaritiesOnline commented to take it further...let's say they do this 100 times a year...some fish will be one and out, but some fish will go back a number of times thinking they might catch the cards...but let's say in total it's around 100 times a year...well that's a cool million dollars a year cash, perhaps more, to be spread amongst the group...and that is a lot of money.
Oh well...that is it for me in this thread...I'm going back to the coins and cards.
Take it from someone who cleans house against friends (greater than 50% wins in tourney play) and family (they suck, except my dad) but would never toss $10k for fun... You were just being toyed with. I've done the same thing... Pull in a few people with $100 buy-ins and then play to eliminate them first and take their money, then play straight against one another. Easy way to make some extra cash.
Hope you had fun. Hindsight is worthless, but you should have gone all-in on the trip 9's. I think Phil Helmuth calls a player who waits and waits for a god flop a "mouse". He advises, don't bet against them when they go in big.

Then keep in mind you are likely to get invited back as they need the money! Set them up
and then let us know how it went! It's called sandbagging and the pros all do it. So, listen
up my man and start studying. Heck, Scarne on Cards is a book that's out of print but would
help you immensely. I learned how to deal from the bottom and out of the middle reading that
book. But, never used those talents! Had to learn them to make sure I was not the patsy at
the cheating table.
My first money game I drew to an inside royal and hit it only to have every one at the table fold!
It was the first hand of the night and everyone was skittish!

How to spot a cheat!

<< <i>Well, I could make this a long post but I won't. And yes, you probably will be invited back, and you likely won't catch any cards then either. Winning poker isn't just about catching cards - it's about playing the other players, and sorry to say and it's obvious that you definitely got played.

I think the guy who got the straight on the river would not have folded whatever I bet cause the bets were some of the biggest of the night......I lost 7k that hand alone.

Now I'm out.

Capiche?
