where do you get prices for your coins?

JobessiJobessi Posts: 267 ✭✭✭
Just a quick question/ poll. Where do you find your prices to sell your coins at? What would you consider fair? I usually use the highest sale price realized at Heritage (Always in the same year).

Your poll answers need to have a few additions. Don't forget eBay, Teletrade, redbook, coins, coinage, CDN ask, etc, etc.

A combination of the choices. Usually look at PCGS Price Guide for a ballpark and Heritage/Teletrade auction results for a closer to reality picture (sometimes it's way higher than the Price Guide, sometimes way lower). For the stuff that doesn't trade frequently like top pop coins or very low pop coins, still try to use the Price Guide as a reference, but also factor in how often the subject coin comes to market in deciding how much of a premium I'm comfortable with.

Ditto. Why limit yourself to just one source?

Combination of heritage and PCGS guide. Don't bother with Greysheet very often although I purchase it on occasion. For big purchases, I definitely go to CoinFacts and check auction archives.

Some folks seem to think I pull em outta my back end but I usually rely upon past eBay, Teletrade, or PCGS Price guide Values.

eBay, Teletrade, Heritage, PCGS Price Guide, silly BUT HANDY guide published in one of the monthly coin magazines, then the other price guide data that Heritage shows when viewing a recent lot item's sale history.

If a person is buying or selling a coin that is worth more than $100 I think they are silly NOT to consult more than one source.

In other words, you are looking for "the greater fool". I would think some form of data smoothing over several sales would yeild a more "market like price". One high data point does not really represent sane reality, of course, it depends on fast you want to sell things, and if you are willing to let the market catch up to your expections. If you have held the coins for a while and have a nice profit, why worry over capturing the highest price IF it take too long to sell and you factor in your cost of selling, like time, effort and general PITA factors.

And for the really nice stuff you see maybe once a decade the price is pretty much whatever the seller is asking for it image

First and foremost I base my selling price on what I paid for the item. The cost of my coins is really the starting point for the selling price. I am surprised no one has said this yet image

I start with the PCGS price guide, but recognize that it tends to run higher than the other guides. Then, if I need a more precise estimate, I look at the other guides like Numismedia and Heritage's combined stats. I also factor in the conditions, throwing in a "fudge factor" to take into account less than ideal circumstances. For example, if I am selling a coin, I estimate its value and then fudge downward maybe 10-20% when predicting how much I will be offered in trade. If I am looking for a particular coin, the fudge is upward, in case the only ones available will be higher grades than my minimum. (That is, I decide I want at least AU50 on a coin that goes for $1500 in AU50, but the only one at the coin show that day is an AU58 going for $2200, and it is graded appropriately and thus worth paying the extra amount--assuming I have it that day--rather than holding out and trying to find a cruddier specimen.)

Personally, when I research any item I am considering adding to my collection whether it be Coins, Medals or Tokens, I don't restrict myself simply to the Heritage Auction history for a current market analysis . There are quite a few of other Auction Firms to research. IMHO EBAY is a very unreliable and missing for accurate data, for true quality genuine rarities. That said, modern coinage is another story.

When selling coins, I like to use some combination of resources, including my purchase price.
For my personal collection, for kicks, I like to compare the prices of large cents from the big auctions, and from the big EAC dealer websites,
