eBay buyer with feedback score 1 wants to pay with check
I had a buyer win two auctions for a combined total of less than $100. The winning bidder has an eBay feedback score of (1) sent me a message asking if he could pay by check. I told him it's against eBay policy to go outside of the payment system. He said he's had trouble adding his CC to paypal.
I'm disinclined to accept a check payment on eBay period, especially from someone with such a low feedback score.
What would you do? Wait and file an NPB?

Not correct. If a buyer asks to pay by check, the seller is allowed to accept it.

I've done it many times but make sure that baby clears before shipping

It is NOT against eBay policy for him/her to offer to pay by check, however it is against eBay policy for you the seller to ask him to pay by check.
1. get the numbers correct, add three digit code, wait three days until PP verifies corresponding bank acct with two deposits-like 2 cents and 11 cents.
help him through this trevail.
An instate check with an AG that will go after bad checks ...possibly, but otherwise POSTAL MO-and that's not 100% these days.
I'd take the check, process it until it clears, then notify the buyer upon shipping that his items are on the way. Not a big deal, really. It's a slight delay in completing the transaction. There was a time people made "pen pals" by transacting this way.

"Technically, there is no simple way for your bank to declare with certainty that a check you have deposited to your account is "good" or will clear, unless the check is drawn on another account at your bank.
Just because the funds are "available for withdrawal" doesn't mean that the check you have deposited will be paid by the financial institution on which it is drawn, even if it appears to be a legitimate personal or business check, bank treasurer's or cashier's check. It could still be counterfeit."
<< <i>There are millions who haven't been exposed to "online" transactions yet, let alone getting past the paranoia of putting private information in a "website". I just read Pen and paper ! in this thread earlier, by michael. ( a bit off topic, but coin related and business related).

It's not been that long since all business was done this way on ebay. Now everything has to be yesterday, totally screwy.

Take it, but investigate throughly to make sure it clears.
Perhaps use CaptHenways suggested method of checking if a check has cleared:
write a code on the front of the check.
ask the buyer to tell you the code once they can see an image of the cleared check in their account.
Although, I'd also use the "regular" methods as well, just because I'm anal. Like calling their bank to do a "merchant check verification." Most, but not all banks will at least tell you if an account has, at that time, enough funds to cover the check. Bank of America is one exception. I always go to a branch and sweet talk a teller into checking the BoAm checks for me.
It sounds like a lot of trouble, but it's not. It only takes a few minutes to make the call. And you save a lot on PayPal fees.

This is also a great suggestion.
If the PO branch has the money you can get it cashed on the spot right there. It's almost as good as cash.
You can also give the buyer a PO MO fee credit in the checkout to encourage its use.

<< <i>If he wants to pay by check, he can always pay via PayPal e-check. I stopped accepting checks more than 2 years ago ( and haven't had a bounced check since
eCheck!
Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

PayPal eChecks can bounce, too.

This is a good solution.

+100... because +1 doesn't nearly describe how much I agree with this.

I have never had a bad check. Had a couple of chargebacks but the only ones I had to eat was when the package didn't show up (international). --jerry

That's true, but if PayPal said ok to ship and the check bounces subsequently, I believe you're still protected under their buyers protection guarantee.
