My first Classic Commemorative

Well, besides a scratched up Columbian Half, this is my first. I payed a little too much, but I really like it. There's a small rim bump above A in America; it's not too distracting though. Hopefully I will be able to obtain many more. Please give any and all opinions and grades. Thanks

    Love it! Nice wear and color. Obviously a well loved pocket piece! Everyone has a MS for sale but a circulated Commem set has a lot of soul!

    I'd grade it Fine-12, and it's nice and original. It probably got a lot of use during the Great Depression went 50 cents seemed like a fortune to many people.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    I agree.....I can just picture what a Dansco (or album of choice) would look like uniformly matched with that one!! It'd be SUPER sweet!

    When I first started and before I sent many to PCGS; I would have had the whole first page filled, including the Ala 2x2, Mo 2x4, Grant* HI and Maryland

    The later years get harder as they didn't circulate but were mostly pocketpieces

    This is what I had before selling many; I have 8 left to look at in my Dansco for happy days image They are a fun challenge, and most intriguing to wonder what journeys they made...

    The more realistic (also semi-unrealistic) goal is the 50 piece set, as I am only 16. If I stick with it, and don't run out of money, I hope to put together something like InYHWHWeTrust's set, which must have been quite the challenge. There are many nice pieces in there. I haven't been able to concentrate my collecting in one area, though, and I have collected bank notes, proof state quarters, and errors, and now I'm moving towards more classic coins like these commemoratives, Morgans and Seated and Bust coinage. I might be able to go to the Chicago show this August, if I can convince my parents. Hopefully I can gain a lot of experience there and maybe add a few things to my collection(s).

    The only circ commem that I don't have from the 20's is the 1928 Oregon and I have not seen that one at all. I'm sure that it's out there. It's only a matter of time before it shows up. My highest graded from the 20's is a VG08 Oregon. The date placement on the Oregon makes it tough to get a low graded one.

    Very interesting endeavor, and I have to say I have never seen most of those coins in circulated condition in hand.
    I would agree that most are pocket pieces, with some like the Monroe and Columbian well known to have been released at face value when the original issue did not sell out.
