ugh, regretting an auction I won tonight

Spent more money than I ever have on a single (first 4 digit) coin and then two hours later my house is on fire.

I'll be ok, but a few grand extra spending money would be nice right now.

Update:

Thanks to all of the earlier well wishers. We've been back in the house for about a month now and it's finally getting unpacked and cleaned up. It looks a lot nicer than when we started and we opted to invest heavily during the renovations -- replacing the "poly pipes" (google it, they are bad news), updating appliances, nice custom blinds, smoothed ceilings, etc etc. It's all good now. Insurance didn't hose me. OH and I finally got around to imaging that coin.

It's a 1939 (Reverse of 1940) Jefferson 5c.

I had to get a bit artsy with the lights to image this and the picture has a little bit of fog on the left hand side, which is annoying, but hopefully not too much.

So here it is !

I remember that feeling (about my first 4 figure coin.....when previously it was less than a few hundred)....
And, I hope I never have to go through what you did with the fire....that sucks and I feel for you....wish you the best and glad you are ok.

went through the attic, breached one outer wall. ceilings upstairs are all torn out and the water damage is terrible. i am downstairs making sure it doesn't flare back up and listening to the drip drip drip of the water still coming down from the ceiling. No personal injury and the rest is just "stuff" that can be replaced or is insured. I recently got the exterior of the house outfitted with cement board. Firemen said that if I still had the old style particle board siding that the top of the house would probably have been engulfed before they even showed up. Fire was caused by a lightning strike.

We're going to be OK. I got the only important things out of the house (family) very quickly.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. The good thing about a coin, you can liquidate it pretty quickly for cash if needed.

I have let buyers out of auctions for a lot less reason than that. Ask the seller
if he would do the same if you feel all right about doing so.

@Broadstruck - Yeah I am hanging out here tonight at least until the fire department does the three hour followup thing. It smells terrible, but downstairs is dry. Luckily internet is up (even though the cable is on that side of the house) and they didnt pull my meter. Just have upstairs circuits killed. The dripping and occasional bits of sheetrock that are still falling are creepy though! Wife and daughter are next door and out of the smell!

Oh here is something pretty cool -- the FD put tarps over the bed, over the entertainment center downstairs, over the dresser and bedroom TV before they hosed. basically two guys ran in with axes and whatnot, two guys behind them with tarps, and a few behind lugging the hose. The saved a lot of stuff covering it with tarps up there.

I think I'd be buying a round for the boys (and maybe girls too) at the FD for that. Unfortunately I live in a place where I am better off using a garden hose and hoping it works.

Sounds more like you are regretting the fire.... if the fire had not have happened would you still regret the coin purchase? I agree with the earlier post that if you really need the money, just ask the seller to cancel the transaction. What heartless bast*rd would refuse given your circumstances? You have the right attitude though, you and your family were unhurt! Everything else is just stuff!

yes, we had a slab leak a few weeks ago, little hot water creek running through the house, had to abandon all the underground pipes and replumb through the walls and ceilings.... 40 holes in the drywall to cut and repair, dust everywhere, while we were living in a hotel anyway, we "might as well" run that extra gas line out back for a bbq island and firepit, "might as well" get upgraded shower and tub fixtures, "might as well" pick new colors for the walls, refinish the kitchen cabinets, get recessed lighting and dimmers, etc etc.

now, in the new better place, we're "glad it happened!"

Sorry to hear about the fire. Hopefully the insurance company will take care of replacing the "stuff" that was destroyed and life gets back to normal quickly.

As for the coin, I tell my wife that my "stuff" maintains or increases in value while the money spend on her handbags, shoes and other stuff is money down the tubes

Monday night around 8pm I had just finished putting a bunch of bids in an upcoming aution, when the wife says it's getting warm in the house and the AC isn't putting out cold air. Tuesday it cost $5k to get a new 5 ton AC installed, almost made me go back and delete some of my bids.

The fire cleanup people have been here all removing debris and getting all of the furniture ready to go so the repairs can start. It's hot as hell in here since we cant run the AC and loud with fans and dehumidifiers. Oh and the flies are thick since I had the doors and windows open earlier. The house looks pretty crazy right now. We're about to head over to target to buy a few days clothes and then to the hotel to finally shower and sleep. Insurance company has already pissed me off. Worse yet, they have already pissed my wife off. Not wise for them this early in the game

I can't wait for the house to get back to normal, to get my coin, and take a few pictures of it. A few folks have asked what it was so -- it's a Proof Jefferson, 1939 reverse of 1940. Not a whole lot of them around and I bought a PCGS 67 (17/0) coin which will fit with the grade and LOOK of the rest of my early Jefferson proof set. Hopefully no one is disappointed that this is all about a lowly Jefferson nickel

Mingot, wow, what a story on your house fire and thank God every one is safe. I have heard similar stories too about what a great job firemen can do to protect other personal belongings from water damage. Truly amazing work a good crew can do!

Heading out to meet with a contractor and adjuster today. Looks like we're going to be living in a hotel for the next few months at this point. Now the real challenge -- how to not get a divorce over being forced to live in tight quarters with the wife and youngest daughter for the next few months. Need to see if insurance will go two rooms for me
