Updated, sorry it's been so long since my last update, been busy.

A sad story: Today I was informed that the oldest coin in the census, a lone 1805 draped bust quarter, has been cracked out of it's doily holder. This was done (as you would imagine) to shoot for an upgrade. Hope it works out for him...the only thing that would make it worse is if the coin comes back as the same grade. This event changes the oldest coin in the census to an 1812 half dollar that was auctioned on Heritage earlier this year.

A bummer on the 1805.

I may have a connection there and will update if we find out the new grade. It will do a 'walk-through' on Wednesday the 18th if all goes according to plan (not my plan!!!) and we'll update if possible.

Shucks . . .a great piece of history bites the dust for a few bucks for a 'coin dealer'.

I'm awaiting a reply from a Vamworld poster, who claimed to have just submitted a 1878 7TF Rev. of '79 PCGS-63 in Doily holder for grade review on a CC quarterly special. I've already splained to him how he would have realized more for the 63 Doily than he would for a 64 Secure Plus.

<< I saw Todd's new DMPL doily at the show today, very cool and a very very nice 64.

I only saw two other doily holdered coins in dealer cases at the ANA show. One was an MS65 Isabella Quarter that didn't really do too much for me and I thought it was too expensive.

The other was an MS63 Bay Bridge commemorative that was very very nice looking and easily looks like an MS65 to me. Would never send it for regrade of course

Might be a good candidate for a gold bean though, that would look neat

It was overpriced too, but I bought it

And I'm not sure if they did this on all of the older holders but it says "BAY BRDGE" on the holder. There was plenty of room for them to add the "I"

I wonder if that's a mistake?

Thanks for the info... I just saw claychaser post his Bay Bridge in a PCGS rattler yesterday and it too didn't have the I... seems like there was plenty of room for the extra letter though!

So how would people feel about getting a cheap 2.0 slab and removing the outer ring [even if you have to cut it] and fixing the ringless doily? I guess if one was so inclined, one could always reholder the ringless 2.0 or just leave it as is. Frankly, I have never been a fan of the rattler slab or its offspring myself.

Will call tomorrow and ask about it.

Just got back from a 4 day golf trip . .and found the email from HB . . .what a bummer!! Not like I buy $20 common Libs for huge premiums just for fun . . I do it for the Doily!!

In defense of HB . .I got a very nice and professional email notifying me of the 'drop' . .

So.... I have to admit my bad on that one

. I was putting the coin and invoice into a shop ticket holder and apparently noone decided to throw out the shop ticket holder which had a hole in the bottom. An unfortunate boom later we have our problem.

As an interesting side note, there are more large cents certified in Doilies than Washington Quarters...who would have guessed that? Not me!

If the outer ring just has a crack in it, I wouldn't think that to be extremely disappointing... a bit unfortunate for sure, but it doesn't sound like the outer ring was completely broken off, right??? At least half of these two piece slabs I've seen in auctions and at coin shows have at least some sort of crack in the outer ring ranging from a tiny 1/4" or less inclusion in the plastic to cracks so large that the outer ring is hardly being held together. Heck, both of the doily holders I have which I've posted above have at least some sort of tiny crack in the outer ring that can be seen if you tilt them just right.

Not a big deal or problem. Greeniejr was a good sport . . . and I posted on another thread how good the entire operation (Harlan Berk) is. I know Bajjerfan is working on a Top-Secret 'Area 51' type project to see if the outer rings can be replaced . . .

Lane . . . I got a bit intimidated a while back when the sigline warning came out so I dropped everything, but that might be my next 'permanent' sigline!

Illini . . . yes. I had a good talk with greeniejr and the ring is still attached. I have quite a few that have chips and dings . . . but heck, I have newer slabs with the same chips and dings.

All is good and as I mentioned, HJB and greeniejr were super on the whole deal. I'll post the cert # when it arrives!

No area 51 suspense here. I will say that the last 2 coins that I got in doily holders must have had the outer ring halves poorly sealed at the grading facility as both halves of the outer ring were nearly separable. The ring halves fit together somewhat like an airtite.

I went to the safe deposit box this morning in preparation for the Baltimore show. While going through most of my collection, I made note of Doilies (two) and 3.5 holders (three). Please add my two doilies to your most excellent census! Is there a 3.5 census brewing?

yellowjacket, thanks for the compliment and the additions to the census. I find it refreshing when I am able to add something other than Morgans to the census.

Regarding the 3.5's, there has been talk of starting a census of 3.5 and 2.5 holders, but nothing has come to fruition. I don't have any plans of starting one soon, but I am sure it will eventually happen.
