I've sold rick a few jaw dropping franklins and once he listed them on his site, I was shocked at how bad the pics were! They didn't show the color well at all and the luster looked as if it didn't even exist. Due to knowing how his pics can make a coin look terrible I can't comment grade wise. I can say that imo that coin will never cross for the simple fact that it will have to be removed from the holder in order to determine its grade and that's one of the most common reasons why a coin doesn't cross. Cross overs are for those who have no confidence in there grading ability. Crack em out and submit like the big boys do .
I wonder how low Rick's buy back would be on this coin?
As far as being graded ms68*? The pics shown do not look great to me but i am sure a lot of discussion went on between the graders before the 68 was put on the label.

I saw the coin several years ago. It's certainly a pretty coin. As to it being a 68*, meh, I find it VERY hard to consider that coin to be technically the finest Franklin out there. I'm assuming Rick sent it in multiple times and he eventually got lucky.
I'd certainly consider other Franklins to be 68*'s before that one, and truthfully I am comfortable with Franklin grades topping out at 67*. Given the design, there are just too many areas where little nicks/dings can show. Personally I can't imagine anyone spending the sort of money that Tomaska is asking for (or probably even his bottom line) on that coin. When I saw the coin several years ago he was asking $17,000 and I thought that was ridiculously high then.
Pretty? That coin is yuck! We need ricko's intervention here. Also, I have a 1956 mint set where the franklins appear technically the same and much more beautiful with their golds, blues, and other magnificent colors. But hey, if I made the grade on an ugly coin like that, I'd be happy too.
This must be the results of a recent re-submittal. I have Ricks 2011 book in my hand and the Frankie in question shows to be NGCMS67*FBL. Now me personally, am unable to judge a coin strictly by photo. I can however say that I've seen over-graded coins in both top TPG holders, and for people to down-grade a TPG because they don't agree with one coins grade is certainly from narrow-minded individuals.
To all the wishers and doubters ... sorry, it is the coin. It's sort of attractive from the images, but then again I like that kind of toning on Franklins. Is it a technical 68? I can't tell from the images and the star designation is subjective. But NGC's grade is irrelevant. Rick grades it $85,000. Really? A Franklin half dollar worth a little south of 100 grand? Really? No, really?

Hey now! It's on the cover of his book. Really though, pricing is subjective, and I'd rather spend 85k on the nicest fugio sent possible.
BTW, it's been YEARS since I've seen this coin, so my memory may be WAY off base, but from what I can remember there was no fingerprint, it was a toning pattern. However, like I said, I thought the price was stupid at ~$17,000, and it's even more insane now.

That's my new marketing... "I know it looks like a fingerprint, but I can assure you it's just a fingerprint toning pattern!" Looking at the coin again, it could actually be unfortunate toning!
I would have thought environmental damage or something if it wasn't slabbed!! If that's one of the best Franklins out there, then I will continue to own...none.

Among the most significant half dollars struck during the twentieth century, this 1948-P must be part of any mint state Franklin that truly wants to be the finest of ALL TIME! 1+ 1+ 1+ !!!
This coin only became "significant" long after it was struck. If still as struck it might only be a MS66 or MS67. It's the toning that gave it the grade bump. One doesn't need this coin to have the finest PCGS REG set.
For $85K I'd think I'd look for a superb gem 1904-s half or maybe a gem mint-marked Walker in the 1919-1921 range. Come to think of it, there aren't too many 20th century halves worth $85K today.

I didn't know that the Franklin Half was the most popular coin on the planet!

<< <i>Fingerprint should be an automatic no 68. >>
The fingerprint would have been an automatic no for the MS67* holder that it was originally in, if the images are true to life.

So as long as it doesn't look like this Franklin, $85k would be fair for a 1953-S MS67 FBL.

Well, they really do and can ask whatever they want.
