My niece was born in 1988. What I want to buy her (As a graduation present) is a complete 1988 American Eagle Gold set with the One Ounce, Half Ounce, Quarter Ounce & Tenth Ounce US Gold Eagles dated 1988. Anyone have one for sale or know where I can buy the 1988 AGE year set?

  • Thank You. On the 1988 AGE Proof Set, I am thinking $200.00 over spot. Is that realistic, my first bid was much less than that.

    Ebay completed sales

You will find the uncirc 4 coin set to be cheaper than the proof set, but it does not come in the nice proof presentation case. You might consider the single $50 proof coin in it's individual case or a 1988 one ounce gold and one ounce silver in graded holders.

    Or, something like this set

  • Hi - The 1988 Olympic set listed is way too high over spot. Now rounding things off, If I figure current gold spot at $1550.00/Oz. times 1.85 = $2867.50, the completed sales on Ebay seem well within my budget.

    Nice budget!

Opening a Roth IRA for a recent graduate is another alternative. It will hopefully encourage them to prepare for their own future.

She would have to have earned income to open a Roth

I see two Olympic gold and silver sets listed (one unc. and one proof, not mine) at $430 each BIN including shipping. Spot is about $400 each, so the price seems reasonable.

The major disadvantage I see with the 1988 Gold Eagle set is that the dates are in roman numerals, so the number 1988 does not appear anywhere on the coins.

  • Well I got the set for $3105.05 plus I will get $62.10 in Ebay Bucks (I use those to buy silver). Never bought a gold proof set before - how does that price seem?

I am sure my niece can read Roman Numerals.

  • That price is right around the same many others paid on ebay. Hope she enjoys your gift.

Very nice gift, and I agree with Edmund ... you did good on getting a fair price image

Where is she graduating from? ... and what was her major??

    Congratulations to both of you!
