I would pass. I'm not a great poker player, I have no special love of basketball, and I'm not a good enough salesman to convince MJ to spend his bankroll on rare coins.

Believe it or not, there are a lot of very capable players that consider 10K "pocket change". But even for small stakes, they prefer to win.

It is many times more difficult to beat poor players than good ones. Fish have no concept of strategy, position and hand strength.

I think your correct and yes although I play poker the last time I played was a year ago......so perhaps I am dumb money.

If you could lose the $10k without losing any sleep over it, I'd say it sounds like a once in a lifetime opportunity and you should go for it.

On the other hand if $10k is in reality too rich for your blood...I'd say pass regardless of the table company.

Is this a cash or tournament game? If cash how many players will be playing? If the players will be less then 20, I say play and you have a 50% chance of sitting at the same table as MJ. If you lose at least you can make some conversation and how many people can say they played poker with the great Jordan.

if I do play I was thinking of asking the table if anyone collects coins in between deals.

Sounds like a fun game... unless you are really good though, you are just feeding the pot... Poker undoubtedly has an element of luck, but there is a tremendous amount of skill involved in high stakes poker. Not a game for the untrained. Yes, I have played poker since my Mother taught me at age seven.... yes, I have played in 'money' games. Won some, lost some - broke even sometimes. Learned a lot about people.

If the OP was "smart" and the 10K meant something to him, rather than just wanting to get into the game to meet some MJ basketball player, he would be much better off staying away.

The previous comment about being the sucker at the poker table is so true. If the averge poker player out there can't comprehend what separates him from real pros, just envision yourself playing against grade school kids in a poker game...although not a perfect analogy, it illustrates the differences between you and the grade school kids, and you and the real pros. Yes, you might get lucky for awhile against real pros, but the luck usually evens out over the course of a long poker playing session, and the bottom line is that the chances are good or even close to 100% that your 10K will be gone by the end of the session. The interesting thing is these pros are so good, you may not even realize exactly how it happened...you'll think it was mostly bad luck at the wrong time...when actually luck had nothing to do with it.

You didn't state whether there would be pros at the table or not, but based on the high stakes and the "invited" comment, to me it sounds like you're a fish being invited to a fish fry. Note that a number of the so-called "pros" who play on TV are not real pros, although some are - but most real pros are similar to the movie "Rounders" who make a living playing in home games and private clubs in a particular area. They will hustle a guy like MJ, and it sounds like they want to hustle you as well.

So if money is no object and the 10K is basically meaningless to you, then I guess you'll maybe go ahead and play...but if the 10K means something to you, then stay away...far away.

I say spend the money on coins instead.

I can get you into a poker game with some very well-known coin dealers , and there is an annual tournament also. Sorry, only a few are on the PCGS Board of Experts.

As most sports fans know, MJ has often gotten hustled on the golf course. Sounds like he wants to get the same glutton for punishment treatment at poker.

But of course, when ya have basically a license to print money like MJ, losing some money doesn't mean all that much to him...with his fame, he can always just "print" some more.

Wow, with that flop, He could have had all sorts of hands that would beat you. Knowing when to fold is one of the most important aspects of poker.
