This is a Judd-271. The "V" in FIVE is an upside-down "A"!
Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

Imagine one of these in a nice G or VG. That'd be awesome.
Listed in the Coin World Encyclopedia as E. 1680 (experimental piece) they state the
obv. designed by James B. Longacre. The rev. is in the Pacquet style, but usually attributed
to Longacre.
They show that it is J-271. There is also a copper version , E. 1681, J-272 where some are
gilt.

I wrote it, so it must be true......
The tentative attribution to Pacquet was merely instinctive. I could find nothing in writing to support it.

Sorry, didn't realize it was a pattern. You could always suggest to the mint or your congressperson to consider using it.

I was thinking about this as well. I imagine the devices would be very small on a half eagle.
As does the date. Perhaps the reason has something to do with the fact that the diameter of this pattern is much larger than the standard half eagle.

That was one of the reasons they did patterns, so that if they liked the overall design they could tweak the fine details before production began.
I am sure that the 1864 Small Motto two cents piece is from a pattern die that was simply used rather than wasting it.
