I helped a guy in Seattle build a Proof Seated Dollar set back in the 1990's. I would bet it is the same set. If so, they are great coins!

Cant wait to see them Bear! I have one proof dollar in my collection, and personally that is all I need. Will probably upgade it at one point though. I bought it raw years ago. It slabbed as a PF55.

Many who have posted in the thread, can. However, it appears that we are the dregs who do not get the early email and, since there was no other link to where said pictures would reside, we cannot transfer that which we do not have, nor know where to find.

    Mintage:

    1860 1,330 (Lowest grade) (2nd best looking)
1868 600 (Highest grade) (Best looking)
1870 1,000 (2nd highest grade) (Least amount of toning)

I guess I would say the 1868 for sure and then the 1860 because it is a different variety and a cameo (depending on if you have any other SL proofs) unless you prefer a whiter coin. As a caveat, I know nothing about this series - Just like Sgt. Schultz on Hogan's Hero's

Visually, I like the 1868 and 1870 the best... that's the best I can offer. My only concern with the 1870 is the skin... has it been dipped and retoned?

    Bear,

What anyone would pick from images is not fair to you, if you really wanted an informed opinion. The image I like best is ....

If this is a series you are not expert in, ask TDN, Katy at Pinnacle, or any other long time dealer in this series.

Thank you all who gave opinions and even the cautionary notes for my protection.

As you are aware, I hold very strict standards for judging coins in my collection and

will use that judgement on the three coins when they arrive. I do appreciate all of

the comments and valuable insights expressed by the Forum even if it is from

viewing pictures. I believe that we all know how risky picture grading can be, but there

are some pluses. The person putting the collection together was very fastidious in his

selections. I attempted from pictures, to put my bid in on what I thought were the three

nicest looking coins. Soon I will take out my magnifying glass and give all three coins the

detailed once over, that has become my hallmark. Rest assured, I am experienced enough

to judge quality, along with the assurance of PCGS grading, to select the best to place

in my growing Estate Collection. Proof S.L. Dollars are rare and very under valued at the moment.

This is a great opportununity to add these beautiful PR coins , at a reasonable price, to the collection.

I believe, that they will accrue much added value in the coming decade, as the demand for these

few available coins can only grow.

I'd get the 1861 for sure and then either of the remaining two. That way you get an example w/ motto and w/o motto.

But knowing how rare plus graded coins seem to be, I'd go for the 1868 if you like that coin and if the premium for the plus isn't too crazy.

Ok, my uninformed, unexpert, opinion the wow factor has to go to the 1868 and the 1861. Whatever you decide I think you'll do fine, but I have to say the 1868 is the best of the lot.

Normally I'd say go only with PF65 or better gem seated dollars as that's where future demand should be. There are just too many coins when 64's are included. Yeah, they
are great "value" coins, but that will always be the case. They will never get promoted like the 65's to 66's.

But...the 1861 is a low survival date, esp. in CAM. If the 64CAM is one of the top 3 or so of those dozen CAMs, that might be a worthy choice with only a single 65 CAM out there.
The coin needs need to be very strong for the grade (65.5 or 65.6). If not stickerable I would pass. The toning on the 1861 sort of has that "secondary" toning look with the overall
surfaces appearing on the too light side. I'd be leery of too many hairlines. The more I look at the photo the more that toning doesn't cut it. Might well have been a 65 coin that got
gigged for some moderate hairlines. Definitely does not have that scintillating look that the 1866-1873 coins do. That's what gets people's blood boiling. There are very few seated
dollars with the look of the 1866, 1867, 1868, 1872. The 1858 and 1861 both in PF64 look to have the usual look toned seated dollars have (ie slightly mis-handled along the way).
Yeah, I change my mind on the 1861. It's just not got the look I'd want. Do not think it's an original coin. And if you're spending the big bucks for long term appreciation I think that
matters. Best not to settle for a urine toned dollar even if it is low pop because of the CAM. If never dipped, it probably wouldn't have made CAM. It probably brings a hefty premium
as well. The next date collector looking at low pop CAM's for their set will probably look at that secondary toning the same way.

The 1868 is the no brainer of the group imo. Like the look a lot. But w/o seeing these in hand, who (other than Bear) can evaluate hairlines on any of these?

The 1870 has some distracting dark toning areas on the reverse that might not make it a winner imo. It's got a fairly high pop in 65 and it's the lightest toned coin in the group. It doesn't grab me like some of the others. I see some other very pretty dollars in this set that look much more appealing (1866-73). I figured the monstrous 1867 is a grade too high for your needs but it's killer looking and near finest graded. Too bad it didn't have a few more marks to only grade 65+....lol. I might prefer the 1867 in 66+ rather than a pair of higher pop coins in 65. At 66+ this is the highest single coin graded with a lone 66DCAM just below it. That DCAM would cost a ton and probably not have the eye appeal of this one. There will be a top pop REG set looking for this 66+ coin someday....if not today. I for one am not a great fan of the DCAM coins being seen as the "finest" as invariably those are dipped coins....also many of the CAMs are as well. Undipped, rainbow colors always get me going. And too often those rainbow coins come with an old fat fingerprint buried in the toning. Don't see that here. This 1867 is just killer.

I like the look of the 1872 better than the 1870 plus it has a much lower pop with the + and competes for the top several specimens graded. The 1871 also looks better to me.
The 1868 and 1872 would make a nice matched pair. I don't mind some slight strike weakness on the 72. It's probably a 66 that was netted to 65+ for that reason. For some reason
the strikes on the no motto coins usually come sharper than the with mottos. Even the 68 is not fully struck. The 1867 is the best struck of the WM's.

Don't feel rushed to make a decision on buying a 2nd coin if you're not quite sure about them. Nothing wrong with buying 1 (or none) and waiting for a coin that has no distractions or
limitations to you. Some of these dollars in this set have similar appeal to the Vermeulle coins that sold back in 2002. The 1859, 1867 and 1869 dollars in that group were quite stunning.
The 1872 Vermeulle dollar was a multi-colored stunner, but had fingerprint that kept it at the 65 level. It was a no-brainer 66 in all other respects. The 1872 here reminds me of that one
    ...less the fingerprint.
